August’s Composition Challenge is now underway.

Here's the image for your inspiration, chosen by last month's winner and current undisputed champion, Dad3353…

And here are the rules 'n' stuff…

By entering the competition you agree to the Basschat Terms & Conditions and Forum Guidelines, which are designed to help ensure the forum remains free of offensive and/or illegal behaviour and material. In a nutshell:

1) Please avoid any content that other forum users may find offensive. If your track contains explicit lyrics, for example, then please warn other forum users so they can choose for themselves whether to listen to it.

2) Please make sure you have permission to use any 3rd party sounds included in your track (ie. sounds that you have not recorded yourself, such as samples of other people's music). The owners of Basschat accept no responsibility for infringements of copyright or other forms of legal ownership, which are solely the responsibility of competition entrants. If we spot any breaches of copyright then your track will be removed from the competition.

For reference: here's a great source of copyright-free material, all available under Creative Commons license:http://www.freesound.org/

3) Entries should be no more than five minutes long and written/produced during the month of the competition, taking inspiration from the photo provided. No cheating!

If you have any questions about the competition rules, just ask.

The deadline for entries is midnight on Sunday 24th August.

Get to it! :)

Is this picture inspired by some Greek mythology that I'm not aware of or something?
Not Greek mythology, but you're not far off. It's one of the illustrations for Oscar Wilde's play "Salomé", by Aubrey Beardsley. This is the last of 13, and is titled "The Climax". The play itself is a version of a biblical story concerning Herod, in which there is an erotic dance performed by his step-daughter (assumed to be Salomé...). He asks her to choose anything as a reward for the dance; she asks for, and gets, the head of John the Baptist on a platter. More here...

Salomé...

The picture can stand on its own merit as inspiration; the story illustrated is equally legitimate. Hope this helps...

Ah thanks. I am familiar with the Biblical story of Salomé, one of only two places in the Bible where birthdays are mentioned! In both cases, someone loses their head.
But I hadn't a clue about the picture - it looked more Medusa-ish. Thanks!

If the picture inspires Gorgons to you, go with it..! Any interpretation is valuable.

Salomé is a story I'm very familiar with. I look forward to this months challenge. Thank you Dad. I will probably produce some self absorbed crap but I will enjoy doing so and possibly exorcise some demons in the process.

I'm glad it catches your fancy; looking forward to hearing what comes out. Demons..? Nah, it's me that needs the exercise..! ... Oh, I see..! Oops...

You are a funny fooker......

I've got an idea but it sounds a bit pretentious. A bit like lilac wine without the talent :D
I will persist though, the picture has stirred me somewhat.

Bit off-topic, but the pic reminds me of a favourite entry in a New Statesman weekend competition. The theme was something like "Historical one-liners". The entry was:

"Salome dear, not in the fridge"
Good luck with putting a tune to that..!

... On the other hand, if you can pull it off, you've maybe a hit on your (blood-stained..?) hands..! :gas:

Here we go, then, to get the ball (or the head..? :o ) rolling...

Enjoy...

Very good. I hit the like button but I'm not sure it was the appropriate sentiment. Respect or enjoy would've been more in line. Very morose but on the ball.

I hope you enjoy it.

Hi Simon, that's great and well done for entering!

These monthly challenges have few rules, but one we do try to enforce is ensuring that compositions are no longer than 5 minutes duration (see the info at the top of this thread). This sets a 'level playing field' for everyone and avoids risk of people submitting full symphonies, should they be tempted to do so ;)

I notice that your track is just over 6 minutes long. I'm happy to let it stand in this instance, but if you get chance please can you edit it down to under 5 minutes and post a new SoundCloud link in this thread. Otherwise, it's just something to bear in mind in future.
Most excellent! Does that mean I can get away with a long mix of my headache-inducing opus?
In a word: no! You've been around 'ere long enough to know better :D
