darkandrew
On the back of a previous thread on here discussing insurance policies and their small print, I rang the providers of my policy to check that I actually have the cover that I thought I had ... and it turns out that I don't. Although my policy covers individual items valued up to £2500, including musical instruments, for individual items valued at £1500 or more a valuation certificate is required (which I don't have). So, does anybody know where I can get valuation certificates for a couple of basses in the London/South-East area?
flyfisher
I can't help with a recommendation, but in my experience of non-musical things you'll have to pay for a formal valuation so whoever you finally choose, I'd suggest checking with your insurance company that their valuation will be accepted before you shell out for a potentially useless piece of paper. toneknob
Last time I did this, I went to Vintage And Rare on Denmark St. When it came to renewing the documents a few years later (valuations were valid at my insurer for 3 or 5 years), I took along the documents and they simply re-signed and -dated the same forms, as if to say "same value still applies". V&R have moved out of Denmark St now, the premises is now occupied by No Tom Guitars, http://notomguitars.com/ - and they have a valuations service, see http://notomguitars.com/pages/valuations. If you use them, let us know how you get on.
Vintage & Rare offered the service to me a few years ago - but Musicguard didn't recognise them as experts but yet wouldn't tell me who they did approve of. That and the fact my bass has no serial number meant their "computer says no"
Oops, thanks mister. I had a misplaced period. I think V&R were charging that much when I had my first valuation done many moons ago - but I took two guitars in and they charged me £50. Costs a tenner to take the typewriter out then. So, worth asking nicely if you've got more than one valuation to do.

leftybassman392
How odd - I have a fair selection of rare & valuable on my policy, all individually specified with make, model and serial no. IIRC. They appear on the policy document as such. I was given a clear indication when I set the policy up that they were individually covered as specified with the values I gave, with the explicit statement that the valuations were to cover replacement (although how you replace a vintage Wal is a bit hard to imagine...). Then again I have a very long association with the insurer with no claims, so that may have helped. I may check again after reading this but I'm pretty sure they're covered.... If you'd not been kind enough to find the page in the first place we'd all be less the wiser.
