OK been a member for over three months so its about time I shared my porn around! So here are some (bad) photos of three of my basses (the fourth - an aged-white Fender Japanese P is on my avatar).

First off is my 1980 Rick 4001 FG which you may have seen before when I (briefly) had it up for sale on the Forum

Second, my Lemmy-alike 1986 Rick 4003 MG/BT which has high-output Bartolini pickups and a Pickguardian treble pickup surround

Third, my latest project, a 2002 MIA Fender P which I bought quite cheaply off eBay this week and to which I have added a Badass III, a celluloid tort scratchplate and a vintage DiMarzio DP122 creme pickup. Nick Cave fans will spot that its styled off Bad Seeds' Martyn Casey's lovely beat-up old P bass.

Hope you enjoyed peeking at my porn stash :)

“I don’t like Ricks” is generally the party line…but if ever there was one to turn me it would be a natural with black hardware just like yours, possibly a 4003 though. Very nice indeed :)

Thanks - here's a couple more (better) photos showing the lovely wood and the modifications better

The Pickguardian pickup surround means you can do fingerstyle with something to rest on and without your thumb inadvertently slipping into the cavity!

This bass has a very slim neck (a la Fender Jazz) whereas my 1980 FG has a neck like a brick (think Fender P but chunkier)!

Well I do like Rics.
They hold a place in my heart along with the big 2 Fenders as they were the only things worth having back in the starry eyed , teenage days when I used to stare in shop windows.
The poor Jazz I'll never get used to - something about the off set body contours - that leaves Precisions and Rics alone on the pedestal.
I've never had a Ric , and never play them in shops for fear of knee jerk credit card reaction. Maybe one day one will seek me out - as seems to be the way with old basses and me.

I'm liking your fireglo esp.

PS. Thanks for kind comments - although they all vary in many respects one thing is a constant - I play all of them equally enthusiastically and with equally minimal technical skills :)

PPS, if I have one "fall back" bass for when I am feeling nervous, its always the 4001 Fireglo - despite chunky neck it has incredibly low action and is so damn easy to play, its like falling off a log - its my "security" bass

That is a 4003. The 4001 was long gone by '86. Anyway the black hardware & binding is :brow: :brow: :brow:

You are absolutely right, 4003 replaced 4001 in 1980. Never thought about this or questioned seller (from Rickresource forum) until tonight! Not that makes much difference in practice (bar the two truss rods on this bass vs one on my earlier Rick)

I will change my signature and the posting. I thank you :)
Beautiful Precision.
I want one just like that.
Stagger Lee. Groovey bassline par excellence.
Cost of putting P bass together: £400 for bass off eBay, £45 for tort s/p, £40 for Badass and £36 for s/h DiMarzio (from Brandoni custom guitars in London) - so all-in cost £521. I think thats pretty good value given new price of Fender MIA Precisions and given that its now exactly to my slightly off-the-wall specs. It also plays so well I am wondering whether I really need two Ricks (not that need has anythng to do with GAS :))
