Pow_22
Always pop into these places just in case they are ever selling something they dont quite know what theyve got bass wise and theres a bragin to be head. More often than not its way overpriced crap they theyre trying to flog but its always worth keeping an eye on i guess. Recently, however, ive been keeping an eye on their website and notice they have set prices and a ''Make An Offer' option. However it seems completely pointless! As in, unless you ''offer'' within about £3 of the asking price it just declines. Ive tried emailing and asking whjat ballpark they are looking for but never get a response. Anyone else use their site to try and get bass flavoured bargains and having the same issues?
CamdenRob
Trouble with cash converters stuff is that anything that looks like a bargain is likely to be nicked...
gadgie
I think most of these place have a fairly good back up service for telling them how much something is worth therefore they are always pretty close to top price for what it is. Of course someone might come in with a custom build jobbie that they think homemade or something and price as is. Of course I could be speaking rubbish as usual. Doddy
I always have a look around their stores, you sometimes drop on a bargain but lately some of the prices are a bit stupid. £30 for a Behringer distortion???? No thanks.
ianrendall
10 years ago I bought a good working order GK MB150S combo for £60 from Cash Generator. Used it for years and years.
fumps
When it first appeared I got a good deal on a Honer the Jack headless but nowadays they are asking daft money for what they have. A while ago they had acoustic bass for £140 which I saw new for £20 more I dont go in anymore
chrismuzz
Always worth a look! I got a Sansamp BDDI in there for £60 once
neepheid
It's not worth looking when one of the guitarists in one of my bands works in a Cash Converters. He gets the pick of all the stuff before it even hits the shop floor, the git
SlapbassSteve
My record is a 1986 Japanese Fender Precision for £99 because 'it looked a bit ropey'. Fixed it up(new nut, new strings, new bridge, good polish and setup), kept it for six months, sold for £450 as I preferred my MiM and needed a new laptop
Cameronj279
Went into the local one recently, saw an LTD 5 string bass, had heard good things (wasn't willing to pay the price they were asking). Looked at the neck just up by the nut and saw a massive crack all up the neck to the fretboard. Told the guy about it and he couldn't have looked more shocked, guess it was him that bought it! I imagine it would have been fixable but it would have probably cost more than the bass was worth.
jazzyvee
Just before Christmas about 10 years back I saw a virtually new Vigier Surfretter fretless guitar including case, gold coloured hardware( no not bass) not a single mark on it in a local CC shop up for sale about £700 I offered them £400 which they refused. They insisted they would sell it on line. I told them why it was such a specialist instrument and that they would never sell it for such a high price but they were sure they would sell it. I went back in the new year and it was still on sale I offered them £300 and we settled on £350. Bingo. At the time they could be seen in guitar magazines for £1300. TheGreek
I found a Trace Elliot 715 combo in my local store for £200 - told the salesman that I'd buy it but what was the best price (thinking I'd be lucky if they dropped a fiver) - he oohed and aaahed and eventually said £160....I couldn't believe it. I sold an Alto Sax in there one day for £150 - they checked on ebay first - they must have seen a more expensive model as they were happy to pay my asking price - I bought it on ebay for around £100 about 3 months earlier.. molan
I bought a Spector fretless for £40 in one in Palmers Green once. It needed some TLC but didn't need money spending on it to make it a lot nicer and playable
gelfin
Cash converters have started to get wise to the value of kit over the last year or so. I have had some fantastic bargains in the past because they just didn't know what they were selling. Squier precision fretless £30. Gale GS 401 vintage Hi Fi speakers £20. GK backline head £50. it goes on. All from local store when I just pop in to see what's there. Edited August 13, 2014 by gelfin
Jean-Luc Pickguard
I found a Burns B3 theremin in the Local Trash converters for £50 last year. I sold it on ebay a couple of weeks later for £138.
Evil Undead
I bought an Aria jazz bass on their website for £26 a few years ago. Made a fun project.
Yeah, you're right I think. When I was at uni in Plymouth we would go there regularly and there was always something cool, but you see some of the people bringing the gear in for a quick sale and it's blatantly not theirs to sell! Cosmo Valdemar
BC Rich Ironbird bass from the Plumstead branch. Advertised at £99 but there was a worrying bow in the neck - when I questioned the returns policy the chap leaned over and offered it to me for £40! Turns out it had just been tuned comically high, once re-tuned the neck settled nicely. Sadly my local branch in Dartford always seems to sell their instruments for reasonable prices, which is really no fun at all. steve-bbb
There is a nice little gretsch single cutaway (ok ok les paul sort of shape ish) in the ME1 branch at the moment (presumably not very old and originally from Manny's Music just along the high street)

cheddatom
The one in Stoke had some KRK 6" monitors. The price looked good so I went to buy them, until I realised they were priced per speaker! I explained you could get them new online for the same price and he basically told me to f*** off!
I guess that approach works both ways and they are pricing high in the hope that someone comes along that doesn't know what prices are like elsewhere. Plus of course everything is used so the perception is that the prices must be cheaper than anywhere else. A bit like DIY superstores that position themselves as offering 'trade' prices and always having sales to create the public perception of bargains. After a while it becomes so ingrained that people don't even bother looking elsewhere. Still, as long as people are happy with the prices they pay then all's well I suppose. StephenYork
There's occasionally a deal to be had in my local one, managed to get a Shure SM58 for £20 with case and what not. Seen a few pedals in there at good prices, some new Boss stuff going for £20-£30.
Russ
I remember seeing a Wal for £200 back in the mid-90s. I'd have had it if I'd had £200 at the time! Back then, they weren't very well informed, and didn't have the internet to check the value of things. Nowadays they can just go on eBay, see what similar gear sold for, then offer you 50% of that.
