For some reason these sorts of shonky "instruments" knocked up from random bits of broken junk fill me with blind, unreasoning contempt and disdain. Funny, that.

There's another (non-music) forum I use which has an entire thread (misleadingly entitled "building your own guitar") devoted to people proudly showing off their own attempts at these pitiful contraptions, which all seem to consist of a splintery box with a bit of stick poking out of it. This thread's currently at eleven pages and shows no signs of stopping.

Maybe I shouldn't be so dismissive, it's probably some sort of really helpful therapy for the poor sods.

Is that definitely a bass? It has four strings but it's referred to as a slide guitar (probably hence the high action) and the word bass isn't mentioned anywhere in the title or description!

Exactly. Looks like a 4-string slide guitar to me too. Scale length of 23" is short for a guitar even.

You could put some bass strings on it though, there are metal 23" scale bass strings out there now due to the recent surge in popularity of the micro bass!

You'd get a bit of a workout trying to fret those strings though!

Yes. 10.29 on the 12th of April 1956 when someone fell on an old mattress less iron bedsted and invented the vibraphone i believe.
