woodyratm
SOLD Hey guys, Bought this from bass direct about a month or so ago for a new band. The stuff was drop A so thought it'd be worth a shot of 5 string and i'd wanted to try a fanned fret system for ages. But I'm really not getting used to it at all. Sadly. I think its just the 5 string stuff i'm not bonding with. The fanned fret system is simple to play. The sound is amazing. I totally love the tone! Really lightweight and just growls in the best way ever! www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/ABZ5_Midnight_Burst.html this is the actual bass. Based in Aberdeen. Could courier (sp?) if required but obv would rather it was collected Here's the bumph from bass direct/dingwall:- The new ABZ series from Dingwall brings together the brilliant fan fret technology with a more streamlined build that produces a Canadian hand made bass at a really good price. Lightweight, easy to play, massive array of tones - this bass will take you to a new level of playability and tone. Time after time players are amazed at how easy and intuitive fan frets feel to play - most admit that it is actually easier and more natural. 5 String Bass 34" - 37"

•Dingwall made in Canada FD3-A pickups with P tone neck pickup - £65 option
•Dingwall passive controls, volume, pickup selector (Bridge, both parallel, both series, Neck), tone. I should be onshore hopefully. Thats too close for me, I'd be homeless but own some amazing basses FWIW - willing to go to about £1700. Not sure how much shipping would be. Satrugar
D'oh! Let this be a lesson kids - never blindly copy and paste! EDIT: I think BD meant fretboard is rosewood, but the neck is maple.
That fretboard is definitely wenge. I think it's just the "old" standard description for ABZs that BD used here....the first few years they only came with maple fretboards, but nowadays they often use wenge (like on most of the higher-end Dingwalls), too. Btw: My ABZ 6 seems to be a perfect twin to this one, only with one more string. Same colour, wood combination, rear strap button and everything. If this one's as good as mine, it's a monstrously good bass! Edited September 4, 2014 by Satrugar

alembic1989
I've always liked these. The thing that bothers me most of all is not the fan frets..but the whopping 37" scale...WTF! How does anyone with normal/ small hands negotiate with that??
You'd be surprised how easy it is! Because of the way the bridge is angled it actually doesn't feel much more of a stretch than a normal 34" scale bass. Worth trying one out I say! Muzz
Yep - my 4 is 36"-odd on the E, and it's only really noticable if you're on the first three or four frets on the E - we sometimes play Smells Like Teen Spirit, and it's the only song I've noticed a slight stretch - that F-Bb-Ab-Db. The improvement in tension more than makes up for that, though: the best B in the business...
Mwoit
You get used to the Fanned frets at 37" easily. It's only a problem if you end up doing lots of stretches on the lowest string around the 0 - 4 frets (common in metal riffing!).
woodyratm
Even metal riffs are a doddle. Very simple to adjust to. Your hand kinda just seems to fit the frets really well for some reason. If anyone is up this north, welcome to try out. Also I'm gigging a new band on the 20th in Dundee if anyones near by. Can easy take the bass too.
