Badass Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Anyone know where I can hear any Alembic bass clips in isolation, not single notes, but a phrase or riff maybe? I've tried my Stanley Clark collection, but there always seems another instrument in the background. Quote
Bilbo Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Not the opening notes of Silly Putty? There are drums in there but the bass is very exposed. Quote
Badass Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 Just listening to that one now, I missed it during my run through last night. Many thanks Bilbo. Any others? Quote
Cosmo Valdemar Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 John Entwistle - Dancing Master, Talk Dirty Both cheesy songs but some stunning Alembic tone! Dancing Master has a monster bass solo in the middle played on both 4 and 8 string (there are drums underneath but the bass is very loud in the mix throughout). Quote
Badass Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 I never gave John Entwistle a thought. Thanks for that info. Can't seem to find any sample libraries though for Alembic phrases. Quote
zero9 Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Stanley Clarke's "We supply" has a good Alembic riff at the start. Plenty of Alembics on Yootoob, including Stanley, Mark King and several impersonators Quote
Badass Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 AH nice, many thanks for that track intro. Quote
grenadilla Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I just bought The Who- Live In Texas 1975 . It is a concert DVD I got for only $10 and it has John Entwistle playing his regular-shaped Alembic. It sounds great! There s a lot of treble twang without much distortion. Quote
molan Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Have you tried Jimmy Johnson with James Taylor? It's not entirely solo but on the double live album some of his playing is sublime and the tone of his Alembic is lovely. I can't hear quite how it is on this YT vid because I'm only on my iphone at the moment but worth hunting down the original live version of this song: http://youtu.be/AGmUsPp1yKI Quote
He's actually using quite a fair bit of distortion, but in a very controlled way - the inherent tone of the bass is never compromised. Plus, it's running in stereo so the bottom is always present and clean - only the output of the bridge pickup is distorted. It's a great DVD but I wish we got to see a bit more of JE! Quote

Bass-Driver Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Here are some sound clips of my Essence 5. Not very proffessional but might get you some picture. Badass Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 Hey Bass-Driver many thanks for those clips. Was there any EQ or compression added to the recordings? Or was it all flat? That is a great help to me. Thanks again. Quote
Bass-Driver Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I can't remember - I recorded them several years ago in a semi-pro studio while recording my ex-band's album. All I can tell is that it went through an Aguilar Tonehammer preamp and there was no compression. Can't remember if an Aguilar amp and cab I borrowed from a shop I worked in at the time were used for the clips (they were used for recording the bass for the album though). This is how the bass sounds in the mix (there's a small solo when the bass is the most audible instrument): https://www.youtube....h?v=H5H6A4J_49o And me failing to reproduce the same line at home (did that in a hurry, about a month after leaving the band), plugged into an el crappo Line6 combo (I hate it, with hatred): https://www.youtube....h?v=2xZl1eBsmdM Quote
jazzyvee Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Here is a clip of my series Ii alembic played by Nate at the Alembic gathering in California a couple of years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGpSJO8zBDo&list=UUQwyLh07zkCIZuRPMJL0Nmw You can also try listening to Bass Folk Song No. 10 from the most recent Stanley Clarke Band album it has quite a long section with the bass solo. visog Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 (edited) I'd recommend Allan Holdsworth latest track 'Earth'. Killer Jimmy Johnson solo on one of his Alembics... Note, you'll have to pledge to Allan's project but I think it will be well worth it when all the tracks are released...
