Have you tried Jimmy Johnson with James Taylor?

It's not entirely solo but on the double live album some of his playing is sublime and the tone of his Alembic is lovely.

I can't hear quite how it is on this YT vid because I'm only on my iphone at the moment but worth hunting down the original live version of this song:

I just bought The Who- Live In Texas 1975 . It is a concert DVD I got for only $10 and it has John Entwistle playing his regular-shaped Alembic. It sounds great! There s a lot of treble twang without much distortion.

He's actually using quite a fair bit of distortion, but in a very controlled way - the inherent tone of the bass is never compromised. Plus, it's running in stereo so the bottom is always present and clean - only the output of the bridge pickup is distorted.
It's a great DVD but I wish we got to see a bit more of JE!

Here are some sound clips of my Essence 5. Not very proffessional but might get you some picture.

I can't remember - I recorded them several years ago in a semi-pro studio while recording my ex-band's album. All I can tell is that it went through an Aguilar Tonehammer preamp and there was no compression. Can't remember if an Aguilar amp and cab I borrowed from a shop I worked in at the time were used for the clips (they were used for recording the bass for the album though).

This is how the bass sounds in the mix (there's a small solo when the bass is the most audible instrument):

And me failing to reproduce the same line at home (did that in a hurry, about a month after leaving the band), plugged into an el crappo Line6 combo (I hate it, with hatred):

You can also try listening to Bass Folk Song No. 10 from the most recent Stanley Clarke Band album it has quite a long section with the bass solo.

  • 1 year later...

I'd recommend Allan Holdsworth latest track 'Earth'. Killer Jimmy Johnson solo on one of his Alembics...

Note, you'll have to pledge to Allan's project but I think it will be well worth it when all the tracks are released...
