Left handed double bass

Can a standard Double bass be played left and right handed. They look symmetrical, so i assume you can change the strings around?

Not that easily. Double basses have a bass bar under the E string, and switching the strings around - even after re-doing the nut and the grooves in the bridge - doesn't quite make a righty a lefty. Also the soundpost will need to be moved.

And some have a fingerboard that slopes away from the E string compared to the G string too.
