timmo
Can a standard Double bass be played left and right handed. They look symmetrical, so i assume you can change the strings around?
Silvia Bluejay
Not that easily. Double basses have a bass bar under the E string, and switching the strings around - even after re-doing the nut and the grooves in the bridge - doesn't quite make a righty a lefty. Also the soundpost will need to be moved.

stingrayPete1977
And some have a fingerboard that slopes away from the E string compared to the G string too.

stingrayPete1977
Thats it, for some reason it's proper name won't go into my brain! Sloping bit under the E it is, lol

stingrayPete1977
Ha, it would only have driven me mad trying to find the name again! "Romberg bevel, romberg bevel, romberg bevel".
