Wayne Firefly
I have a cheap £50 Peavey 1x15 cab that lives in our van, in a storage compound. Its a cheap cab left there incase the van gets broken into, set on fire or filled with water, left out in sub Arctic / Death Valley like conditions or whatever. So, Im putting 500 watts into it and the speaker flaps around so hard, its bounces against the steel front grille making the whole grille vibrate. It is quite funny to see. Not only that, apart from being woefully too quiet, it farts and cracks like a good'un when cranked to band volumes so its days are numbered. Im looking at replacement drivers, starting with Lean Business with their ranges of Celestions and Eminence. Im thinking 400 watts at least, say 8 ohms to have some degree of mercy. Will something like that be any good or should I go down the PA speaker route ?? Anyone got any ideas how well this would work ?? http://www.lean-busi...aker-p-795.html To be honest Im not too bothered about nuances of tone, its more of a Bill Gould bludgeon approach without having any kind of attachment to it incase the worst happens. Practical reasons really. Its used with a GK MB500, a Sansamp Bass Driver and a Stingray so its a distorted metallic clank. The point is thats its relatively cheap, not assed about neo magnets either. Anyone got any thoughts on the matter ??
ash
There are often Eminence speakers cheap on eBay new and secondhand in good condition, also it's worth keeping an eye open for old UK Fane Colossus and McKenzie drivers. If you aren't worried about weight and just want 'oomph' there are plenty of bargains out there. I've been thinking of converting a couple of old WEM Songbird cabs into a pair of small bass cabs as the drivers are long blown but I'm going to go down the super budget route and try some Soundlab drivers - if the worst comes to the worst they can always be used as passive vocal monitors. These are nice old speakers.
tonyquipment
Stick a sub driver in there Force 500w through it - make it flap like a bird!!
chris_b
Peavey 15's are good cabs. I'd get a second one, then get the first reconed and use them as a pair. If the cones are moving as much as you say, you might need an SFX Thumpinator. Then you won't wear the speakers out in the future.
Bill Fitzmaurice
If the cones are moving as much as you say...
That's usually an indication that the driver is not spec matched to the cab, something which has been totally overlooked so far in recommendations. Phil Starr
If you are putting 500W into a single 15 unfiltered and probably with bass boost then there isn't really a speaker made that will cope long term. It says something good about the Peavey that it is still coping. Look inside and if it says Black Widow on the speaker it is a decent speaker. The Thumpinator is a great idea for a speaker abuser It removes the deep bass you can't really hear without affecting your sound much and you can crank further without damaging your speaker. It sounds like you need to get a second cab if this doesn't work. You are asking a lot of a cheap single 15. You can buy a second hand Peavey in a cab for £50-100. Less than the Kappa pro
Wayne Firefly
Some great advice and info there, cheers everybody !!! Also, I was told by the lad I had it off, its a replacement driver already in it so god knows what it is. I was just hoping there was something that could handle a bit of abuse out there !! BassBunny
So it has a replacement driver in it and it's crap. As Bill has pointed out that is probably because it is not matched to the Cab and you want to throw something else in without matching it??????? You will probably end up with the same result and lighter in the pocket. Why not do an internal measurement, mention any porting there is and ask a forum member to run it through one of the modelling programs, (WinISD or similar). At least then you will know what speaker will be suited.
