Is there a track that you reckon has that typical 'Jazz bass' type sound?

Genuinely curious as the Precision seems really recognisable, but the Jazz has always been a bit of a grey area for me. :)

The sound of a Strat is known as before and after Hendrix.
The sound of Jazz Bass is known as before and after Jaco.
In fact the specific signature sound of a bass is given by the artist who play it.
Can we recognize this sound unless we play a specific technique or song?
Nice question...

That's because the Jazz does a lot of sounds.

Does indeed and they are all 'classic'
The 3 sounds I go for in a jazz..and you wont get them all off the same bass, are
Marcus Miller slap tone.
Jaco rear pickup
and then modern vintage...which comes from the late 60/70's type basses which
Fender have started to replicate again.

On a related subject to this i've recently bought a jazz bass having been a staunch p bass player for years. I initially went for the 'everything on full' approach to vol/tone, which works well on the P bass, but I've now realised there's some very diverse good sounds from the jazz that aren't on P basses.

1. Neck p/up on full, bridge p/up on 75%, tone on 75% = sounds like a P bass with added definition from the bridge p/up, but fattened and smoothed off by rolling down tone.
2. Neck p/up on 75%, bridge p/up on full, tone on 75% = really fat, full, honky midrangy tone
3. Everything on full = really pleasing but slightly scooped mid sound which is ideal for slapping but seems less good for cutting thru a full band.

Gonna keep on exploring as there's a world of sounds hiding in there (though i still like the plug in and go approach of the P Bass!)

Indeed it does.

For me, there is the Marcus Miller Jazz sound, Jaco and the vintage 60's sound
but there are so many others and that is without getting into whether you play with a
pick or not.
