decorators radio Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Hi all. For a bit of experience and something to do, I'm going to pimp up an old Squier Bronco I managed to pickup on Ebay for under 50 quid. I used to have a Mustang a few years back and regret selling it on now, but hay-ho. I know there are/have been a few Bronco posts on here but not in recent history and I have a question that hopefully you good people will be able to assist with: I'm looking at the Seymour Duncan SCPB-1 pup to slot in which I think will require relatively little body and woodwork. This selection however does pose me with an issue - the pole width of the pup will be slightly greater than the existing string setup. I'm looking to swapout the bridge anyway, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas/opinions on the best/most suitable bridge to accompany the SD SCPB-1? I'm a little bit of a novice as far as mods go, so please correct me if i'm on the wrong track. Thanks in advance, Stuart. Quote
Sollophonic Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I used a Hot rail guitar pickup in mine, and made a new pickguard. I cut down a jazz bass control plate tomake a sort of "faux-Mustang" vibe I know the pole pieces lining up are good in terms of aesthetics, but most pickups have a magnetic field that aren't affected by pole pieces being a bit out of line. Byo Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 That Bronco sure looks amazing! Good job with the mods! Btw, how does the hot rails sound on bass? Paul S Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 I pimped my damaged Fender Musicmaster to create a Frankenstein-esque 'Mustangmaster' ©®™ - lookie here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/242658-show-off-your-short-scales/page__view__findpost__p__2519732 Adding a Precision pickup made a huge difference to the tone. I think the bridge on these is functional at best but I decided I can live with it. Quote
ahpook Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Has to be one of the best thread titles I've seen on BC Quote

jimbaby Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I have a Bronco and love it, the weak tuners and the two saddle bridge would be on my list as well. Quote
Sollophonic Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Fender Amp knobs will be added soon. Now I need to find myself a cheapish, loud bass combo to do the odd gig/session with. Quote
Golden_Sonic Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Read this: http://www.shortscale.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42850&highlight=bronco Quote
Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 I put a kent armstong hot rails humbucker into a 71 musicmaster and a kent armstong enclosed cool rails humbucker into a 72 musicmaster. The cool rails sounds a lot better to me darker & punchier where the hotrails has more mids and less bass. The enclosed cool rails I used looks just like a stock musicmaster pickup as well. I don't know how the KAs compare to the SDs though Quote
twentyhertz Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Mine's not been pimped too hard so far. It was a bit of a recovery job, costing me a whole £20, coming from the back of another BC member's cupboard covered in assorted stickers and dirt. The first thing I did was get it cleaned up, and to give it that classy touch, fired some Poundland wood-effect vinyl wrap onto the scratchplate. The next, and possibly most major transformation was playing around with the tuning. I'd always had this daft idea about making a half-bass-half-baritone thing, and that's exactly what I've done here. It's tuned B-E-A-D using the middle 4 strings from a set of D'Addario Bass VI strings (EXL156: 34-44-56-72). My next plan is to stick some kind of rail pickup in it, but for now I'm actually reasonably pleased with how it's treating me :-) Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 What about the badtz marou scratch plate ? Quote
neepheid Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 A few years ago, I put a lipstick Strat pickup in mine (bridge/hottest one), new pickguard, 4 saddle bridge (which I had to doctor for top loading), and fitted full size tuners. Quote
M@23 Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Aaaaand now I'm trawling ebay for one of these... I have a few single coils laying around that I took out of a Strat, including a Duncan Hot Rail! Never occurred that it might work in a bass. Quote
