cameltoe
Thanks to the ever wonderful David at Cotswold Bass guitars I may soon have a 70's project P bass to work on. One thing is a definite- it needs a refin! I wondered if anyone could give guidance on the available colours at this time? The bass looks as if it was originally black, and has a wonderful grain which would compliment my preferred choice of white blonde, but i'm completely ignorant as to what was available at this time, other than that really weird mocha brown colour! I saw a yellow precision with an S8 serial in Modern Music in Truro a few years back- it wasn't faded Oly white, it was very much yellow- ferrari yellow, if you like. It looked like the original finish so not sure what this was? Thanks guys!
JPJ
It could have been either graffiti yellow or TV yellow as I think both of those were available to order
Jean-Luc Pickguard
Yellow with an S8 serial (or S9) would most likely be a 1980/81 'Monaco Yellow' as part of the 'international' colour range. This range also included capri orange, Maui Blue and cherry sunburst. The cherry sunburst Precision I bought new in '82 & still own is could probably be used as an anchor for the QE2, as could the others in the international range I tried at the time. I believe the weight is due to the heavy northern 'baseball bat' Ash of the body which weighs a lot more than Alder or southern Swamp Ash
skankdelvar
The late 70's colour palette was fairly restricted. I can't be sure as to whether the all of the following were available through 1977-1978 but it's the best that memory can do: Black White Blond (?) Natural 3-tone Sunburst Walnut (official name for 'Mocha' - discontinued in '78) Wine (like Dakota Red only darker) Antigua There may be others and I've probably forgotten them. Roland Rock
I'm currently on the process of re-refinishing my S8 P in Capri Orange. mmmmmmmmm
Emanew
Here the 70's Fender finishes i found in "The Fender Bass, a illustrated History". I took pictures of my book, i hope it can be read You can add the very late 70's Antigua I am also crazy about Capri Orange and Sahara Taupe but they were created in 1980 so for your 77/78 project it doesn't match. Spike Vincent
The 78 in my profile pic started life as Olympic White, although it's a bit darker now.
