I would love to be one of those players whom without knowing any theory whatsoever can just instinctively choose the right passing notes and create melodies to compliment the overall theme of a given piece of music... but sadly I am not that naturally gifted and scales / chord theory gives me the tools to create interesting basslines without them I'd just be playing root notes....
