Not the slightest chance I'm doing it myself as I'm not patient enough to learn how to. Can anyone recommend me someone or a company who do them? He did a kind of diary on it here. He is refinishing part of a BB5000 I bought that some mad man had taken a sander to. I've not seen it in the flesh but the pics are dynamite. Andyjr1515 Posted September 27, 2014 Share Posted September 27, 2014 Hi, Weststarx I'm flattered by Paul S and Manton Customs' endorsements (thanks, guys - really, really appreciated!) but original-colour-matched spray jobs are not really my forte. Paul's Precision Lyte was black - giving me the freedom to use paints, lacquers and techniques I knew would be compatible - and he bravely accepted all of my list of things that might not be quite the same as a quality spray job. It is very much on my 'to-do' list to experiment on one of my own guitars (part of my ethos is not to experiment or learn on someone else's pride and joy - I would always try it one of my own first), but haven't got round to it. The reason it needs checking is that most true fender original-colour-matched sprays are nitro-methane, which are notoriously incompatible with some other products and I wouldn't like to find I had some incompatibility on someone else's bass Now, talking about professional spray jobs, Manton Customs produce some fantastic results so, apart from the distance, they would be a good call. Ref the distance - is that such a problem? Are you confident taking a neck off and the scratchplate off? If so, there's not much that even a poor courier firm could break if you sent the body only to Manton or another re-finisher... [/quote] I was quoted £350 about 4 years ago to refin an EB3 from cherry to white. Another place was £280 but only if I stripped it myself first. I was quoted £120 by Andy's of Denmark St for a cherry refin about 30 years ago, so maybe the £255 isn't that steep [i]IF[/i] the quality is high? [/quote] He has done 2 bodies and 2 necks for me and one body for a friend. He reliced them because that was what I wanted. [/quote] That's about the going rate for a good quality job tbh I recently had my GB IV refinished in Fender 'Daphne Blue' (about as retro as you can get!) by Brook Guitars (www.brookguitars.com) in Devon and it was £260 plus the cost of the paint. synthaside Posted October 21, 2014 Share Posted October 21, 2014 Its actually nowhere near as hard to Refinish a bass as it seems obviously i wouldn't do this on my pride and joy, I did refin an old Aria CAT P/j from a horrible glitter sparkly red to a nice dart purple and got a fantastic finish with car sprays and a couple of tins of spray gloss varnish. If anyone does decide to do it themsleves just dont make the mistake that i did ..... the drying time on the varnish Is far far far far longer than you think It looked great and felt hard to the touch so i popped it on a stand to dry ...... lets say it "bonded with the stand " Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
