Dad3353
Good evening, all... I have decided to promote, each in turn, the compositions presented in the monthly BC Composition Challenge. I shall give my own, personal, view of the piece, in the hope that at least some will be inspired to give the work a listen, and perhaps a vote as their favourite. All the pieces can be heard here... All Alone, from lowdown ... The main theme is announced right from the beginning, with a fairly sparse marimba-like 'jingle', over a subdued echoing string chord. Once through, then the beat starts up, a firm pulse and and insistent 'wood-pecker' percussion. We're definitely in Birdland. The theme is then stolen by a magpie piano, which is joined by strings, with another drum set adding its own variant of the beat. There's now a strong pulse going. Another 'round' and the pressure mounts up, with a counter melody, then another still, replying to the building ensemble. We are now in full flight. A fluttering orchestral "whoosh..!" dispels the whole illusion, underpinned by a jungle break beat. Calm returns, only to have that cheeky marimba climb back onto the perch, to set off the reconstruction, with variants, as we reach the climax and chordal resolution in peaceful harmony. A complete construction, then; eminently coherent and 'purposeful', well formed and well executed. There is an evident technical ability in the use of the various instruments, each having its own characteristics utilised to the benefit of the whole, clearly defined. The phonic space is fully exploited, and a joyful dynamic takes us on board with deceptive simplicity. A positive, almost 'happy' ditty. Not overly long; we are left with a willingness to continue the journey. Tomorrow's 'Play of the Day': Skol303's 'On a Wire'. Same time; same place. Until then... Have a nice day Douglas 1 Edited September 28, 2014 by Dad3353
