Dad3353
Good evening, all... I have decided to promote, each in turn, the compositions presented in the monthly BC Composition Challenge. I shall give my own, personal, view of the piece, in the hope that at least some will be inspired to give the work a listen, and perhaps a vote as their favourite. All the pieces can be heard here... On A Wire, from Skol303 ... We go straight into the mood of the piece, with guitar arpeggios in minor key, and close, melancholic vocal line. The almost spoken text draws one in, inciting attention to the lyric. A slow strum helps fill slightly the space, maintaining the suspense until a tap from the snare sets off the beat. A slow(-ish...) shuffle, accompanied by a mobile bass line help the voice to express more emotion still, with some astute percussive phonics lending a very modern colour. We are returned to suspension with a 'middle 8' using a ternary feel to take us off balance. It's a lure, to better re-establish the beat, adding another guitar as a dark counterpoint to the voice, decidedly more affirmative, with some nice syncopation. We're led to the final statements, and a delicate outro, featuring the bass. We're seeing the world reflected as through the beady eye of the solitary bird, expressing some discomfort in the bitter anger of rejection by peers. We're far from the dance floor here, rather an introspection and release of pent-up emotions. A delicate performance, with Spartan use of the guitars, a convincing bass and clever percussion throughout. The intimate voice is entirely in context, both with the lyrics and the picture. More for listening to than dancing to. Tomorrow's 'Play of the Day': Leonard Smalls' 'Unbalanced'. Yesterday's was...
