I have decided to promote, each in turn, the compositions presented in the monthly BC Composition Challenge. I shall give my own, personal, view of the piece, in the hope that at least some will be inspired to give the work a listen, and perhaps a vote as their favourite. All the pieces can be heard here... [url="https://soundcloud.com/dredd-and-the-badass-weed/unbalanced"]Unbalanced, from Leonard Smalls ...[/url] The piece opens with seemingly random notes, percussive hits and noises. We wait patiently, confident that some resolution will follow. The chaos continues, accentuates even. The voices of dozens of chirping birds seems not to carry the coordination of Mozart. The wittering reaches a sort of apotheosis, and a respite is promised. A short lull; the tuneless, arhythmic, atonal clamour returns, relentlessly maintaining a continuum of anarchy right to the end. A cheeky farewell is offered by we know not which songster. Silence falls... There is a certain sweetness in the song of the lark. This flock is not, apparently, a flock of larks. Whilst illustrating deftly the 'real-life' effect of this collection of wild fowl, the ambience created is more a cacophony than a symphony. One would not greatly appreciate a dawn chorus such as this every morning. There is justification for the holding of a shotgun license. The only lark here is Leonard's.
