Dad3353
Good evening, all... I have decided to promote, each in turn, the compositions presented in the monthly BC Composition Challenge. I shall give my own, personal, view of the piece, in the hope that at least some will be inspired to give the work a listen, and perhaps a vote as their favourite. All the pieces can be heard here... Startling, from Bilbo ... One is startled from the outset by a cheery trill from the flute, a solitary call to rise and shine. The bass joins in, as does a discrete drummer, marking out the asymmetric rhythm. The riff evolves with timely modulations, hopping up or down a semitone or two, before striking out on its own, a tuneful melody over an underpinning bass. The cycle achieved, a break is announced; the bass takes over, with the lilt mimiced by the flute. Back to the main theme, continued by the bass and drums; the flute has given way to an interesting guitar (or is that steel drums, or a marimba..?), taking a more free-form approach to the melody. The structured modulation is respected and we are led around another complete cycle, to be joined by the return of the flute. The two play together, almost in unison, until the bass and drums drop away and the songs are left to fly off together, but alone, into the distance. There's no denying; it's birdsong all right. Tuneful birdsong with a natual-sounding call from the wild, tamed for our ears. The variations in melody seem simple; the result is a feather-weight sophistication which carries us airborn with ease. The occasional discord keeps the harmony from over-sweetness, and the insistent bass line holds the whole piece in place until the release at the end, when all is scattered to the wind. Startling..? Cheeky, cheery, delightful. Tomorrow's 'Play of the Day': Lurksalot's 'Tweet'. Yesterday's was...
