gelfin
Saw this via the ebay wierd and wonderfull topic. My guitarist had sometime ago said he would like an electroacoustic mandolin. He has acoustic. So I dug out an old sort of Tele blank that I had been given years ago that I had stashed away for future use. It had been poorly rough cut to shape. It is 2" thick very solid mahogany. Searched through my boxes of bits and got a few bits from flea bay. And so it starts. Guitar will be. Tele neck, Strat electronics. Mandolin will be donor neck (not the one shown, a newer one) Tele neck pup and piezzo under bridge with a blend pot rather the pup selector. Myke
That's a cool idea Any reason why you have chosen to have the neck on the Mandolin straight as opposed to at an angle like the first pic?
gelfin
I thought about doing it that way. I think it was done to sort of cram it in to an existing Tele. I felt that lowering the Tele neck on the body would give more space for playing. Giving space for a decent tailpiece and a bridge that will take a piezzo. Also it will fit into a standard case. There's loads more reshaping to do to get it right. The lower horn will be cut away more as per black line to give better access to high frets. I guess it will only just resemble a Tele when I have finished butchering it. Edited September 30, 2014 by gelfin
gelfin
A little more progress. With correct mandolin neck and a bit of reshaping. Mr Anthony
This is so cool. I can't wait to see how it turns out!
alittlebitrobot
Very interesting build! That swimming pool rout for the guitar must help compensate for the extra body wood.
gelfin
Absolutely right. The wood is 2" thick and very heavy. Too heavy. So there's more routing to do for the mandolin electronics and anywhere I can lose weight. Bear in mind this isn't planned as a quality build, more of an experiment. Here's some of my earlier experiments. gelfin
A bit further along
allighatt0r
Are you going to be using double courses (eight strings) for the mandolin strings, or just single (four strings)?
BassBus
Four strings would be a ukulele. Edited October 7, 2014 by BassBus
gelfin
8 strings.
