Dad3353 Posted October 2, 2014 Share Posted October 2, 2014 Good evening, all... I have decided to promote, each in turn, the compositions presented in the monthly BC Composition Challenge. I shall give my own, personal, view of the piece, in the hope that at least some will be inspired to give the work a listen, and perhaps a vote as their favourite. All the pieces can be heard here... [url="http://soundcloud.com/dad3353/wind-in-the-wire"]Wind In The Wire (54+1...), from Dad3353...[/url] We are greeted with a solitary bass drone and a suggestion of melody. A first chirrup, followed closely by another, then another still. They start to pile up, each vying for a place in the spectrum. As each motif is introduced, the previous ones move to one side or the other. The bass maintains its hold as the layers continue to build, and a dry rattle announces a newcomer; a medium-fast snare beat breaks through. The chorus is now in full swing; the drums become more agitated, almost frantic. A lull offers little respite, as the snare powers its way back into the driving seat, pushing us on, and inspiring subtle variants in the bass. All comes to a head, with a final 'snap' of the snare expelling all excepting a single, solitary bass drone. The picture is built up progressively, bird by bird, with a specific 'melody' for each one, the only constant being the solitary bird perched in the bass. Once all are confortably ensconced, the percussive chattering starts up for real, giving a semblance of order in an otherwise fairly chaotic soundscape. A slight release in tension helps us maintain interest just long enough for us to reach the final shot, when all is dispersed, to our relief. Yesterday's was...
