Wooks
Being new to this bass lark, I'm just starting to discover great bass players and have started to listen to other music besides metal!! I know that he his basses have the ability to do weird tunings, but I was wondering what does Michael Manring use to get all of his looping sounds? Wooks
So how does he do this then??
ZMech
he uses a loop pedal, which as the name suggests, can record what you've played and play it in an ongoing loop. that's as far as my knowledge goes, other than you can get them with varying abilities as to how many loops they can handle at once. Jase
This is a wonderful Manring piece Wooks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY4Ra2KOyas...feature=related
RayFW
This is my favourite Youtube video of Mr Manring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waIhJDgC5dQ
Wooks
Cool stuff, any ideas which looping pedal he uses? Is it something like a Headrush??
6stringbassist
Check out his forum on talkbass. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42 I've never seen him use a looper, I can't hear that link to him playing, I don't have speakers unfortunately, I'm at work. There's a really good DVD out, it's a few years old now, but he basically shows you how he played the tracks on Thonk, and is really worth getting.. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Michael-Manring-Ba...3009&sr=8-1 The 'Enormous room' is from 'Thonk', that is just him playing in real time, no looper as far as I know. There's a Jaco one but oddly it's done on a IMO poor solo by Jaco so there isn't much difference. WEIRD FUNNY PEOPLE!!.
Oscar South
I think he uses a Headrush.
Doddy
I love Michael Manring-great player and a really nice guy. Check out the 'Yo Miles' albums to hear him play some 'regular' bass-seriously groovy. As far as looping goes,I believe that he uses a Lexicon JamMan.
Dubs
I saw Michael Manring play at a tiny venue in Southampton (that place we do not talk about in Portsmouth) called the Joiners. He was on a tour with Steve Lawson and this American double bass playing singer/songwriter that was really really good, but I’ve forgotten his name. Great night, about 5 years ago. Spoke to him after the gig, but I didn’t really say much. The songs that really impressed me were the ones where he used his bass with the hip-shots on every string at the headstock as well as down at the bridge – that was very impressive. Great player. wulf
That was probably Steve Lawson, Michael Manring and John Lester - I went to a London performance on that tour. Wulf
Jase
Some nice interviews of Manring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVUeJMMr6dA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uJFAIHHllU...feature=related Really mellow type of guy. These were pretty amazing for their day, and are not to be confused with the later Digitech JamMan.
molan
I saw Manring last time he was over and he was awesome. Started out playing his tiny little Vinnie Bass and I couldn't believe the sounds he got from it - inspired me to track one down & buy it! Alun
I saw him on the Manring/Lawson/Lester tour in Reading and he was mindblowing. Even sat six feet away, I couldn't work out where all that sound was coming from He didn't do "Enormous Room" in his set, but someone must have asked about it as he then played it afterwards in the middle of signing things. Cheers Alun
