It's one of my favourite songs

begin rant...

I watched this BBC auto-tribute earlier...Thankfully, lining up these blink and you'll miss them popstars alongside the venerable greats and getting them to sp**k up the odd line against a horrific, fat headed abortion of a backing track is so anathema to what makes the original a beautiful, delicate, artful thing, it thankfully hasn't tarnished my love of Beach Boys version.

But f***ing hell…this is so horrifically overproduced, over thought, over peer-group-researched and broadly inoffensive it makes me ill.

And I get the point - It's meant to be a tribute to music and specifically the music that is recorded for and by the BBC, but really, the deficiencies of this recording are so stark when you compare this banal, please-everyone, rendition against the stellar original.

I mean…. how can a song so gloriously personal and affecting be sung by different people, line after line…it's such a STUPID idea. Arrrrgh!!!

And really, there are hundreds of other songs that would have been more suitable and less annoying. God Only Knows is one of the few songs that never needs to be recorded ever, ever, repeat ever again because the original is PERFECT.

rant over :)

Saying that, it's a very pretty visual treatment. But that doesn't make the choice of song any less ball-achingly annoying...

What I dont like is the thought that this version may well become the one that anyone under 40 will remember.
As has happened with so many classic tracks in the past.

I suppose it's so bad because you can't help but compare it to the sublime original.
Brian Wilson seems to have that multi-voice thing going on like the lady on the thread the other day :-D

I don't know why, but I found Dave Grohl's presence especially cringeworthy.

+1

He was, like his late brother Carl, one of the sweetest singers in the sweetest band of the 60's. AFAIK heavy smoking ruined the timbre in his voice in the 70's :( .

Listen to this, with Brian on lead vox: https://www.youtube....h?v=_YIaXYrCGys
And the perfectly gorgeous original release: https://www.youtube....h?v=cn3El5WPiLc

EDIT: Carl Wilson sings lead on the original release. Deeply moving...
Here's a doc on the making of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVUBpzlELOg & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCTVcNsJGX0

Dunno. I LOVED the first 23 seconds, then it was OK until Brian May done his bit.

Bit of a hatchet job on the arrangement too if you ask me (shuffles off to catalogue slippers etc…)

Blimey :o

Any cover of any song is bound to upset some people, but it's hardly the end of the world is it?

It's a very special song - It's as if someone covered Let It Be - Oh wait: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwGERoFtQoM

It isn`t perfect, but i don`t know why it gets that much vitriol. Granted, it isn`t a patch on the original, but i am happy for these songs to make an appearance if it gets kids to know about the song, and discover the original.

Just trying to recapture the "Perfect Day" moment again… and this time failing.
This.
BBC's Perfect Day worked because it was something new, the song itself was good and not particularly well known, and the original version with Lou Reed's "singing" wouldn't have appealed to a lot of people.
And these.
This time, the original was pretty much perfect to begin with, almost everyone knows it. The only fun part was trying to recognise the different performers.
And that.

I especially liked the end of The End of the World.

But back to God Only Knows... there was something niggling me about that version, and know I've hit on it:

WHERE'S BONO?!?

You beat me, I only lasted about 5 seconds and had to stop and go out for a fag.

If I'd watched any longer I would have probably started smoking again

As a charity record, appealing to as wide a market as possible, therefore raising the most cash possible, then it's absolutely fine.
As a piece of music, to be judged as such, the phrase, "Square pegs, round hole" springs to mind.

I was trying to give it a chance until I saw Chris Martin laying on the floor , at least I think thats what I saw I've not gone back over it

Heard it 3-4 times on the radio today though, I suppose if it is the best way to raise money through a song then thats that, we are a minority and they are not aiming it at us.

Perhaps they should have us ring up and pledge in order to stop it playing.

Put in a very different style than I would have done but I can't believe how close you have got to how I felt about this, right down to the visual. What a waste of some enormous talent :(

What's the problem? You hate hate hate it, but it's alright, it's has no musical integrity but that's not what it's about is it. Jesus! Peeps! Get a grip! :)
No hate from me just a huge feeling of disappointment that an enormous amount of talent has been wasted by poor treatment of said talent and a great song.

Rather sanctimonious and judgemental if I may say :)
