Which Warwick??

I once owned a German warwick streamer LX jazz man, a precursor i believe to the fna jazzman (?)
There are enough imaginative descriptors on here, (go play some :) )
This bass was fantastic to play. The electrics /preamp gave me such a diverse tonal range but more importantly the neck was fantastic. Super flat how i like it, huge bell brass frets.........
One i should never have let go.

Of course the purist in me says it must be German what're ever you choose. :)

With the used prices of Warwicks, you should probably go German.

I just bought my first bass after 14 years of playing electric guitar, picked it up yesterday:

It's a 2004 Thumb 5 bolt on.
Body is ovankol, neck is 3 piece ovankol, wenge fretboard, 24 frets.
Tarnishing to some of the saddles and screws as you would expect and the JANII had disintegrated and been replaced with a nice bone one, but otherwise excellent condition, cost me £500, same as a new Mexican Fender P-bass would have cost me.
And yes, it growls.

If you are patient you should be able to pick up a Corvette for under £400, possibly even an active one.

check out Thomann, they are clearing out their stocks of Pro Series Warwicks at silly prices, don't be put off by them being made in Korea, they use the same pickups/preamps & hardware as the German basses, they are superb instruments,i have 2.
if you want a 4 string i would snap this up http://www.thomann.d...o4_black_hg.htm
my Thumb sounds bloody ace,its the punchiest bass i have ever owned, whereas my Corvette has a mellower sound to it,i love both of them.

Really interested in these now. But thumb v streamer that's the question. Love a PJ but thumb seems to be the quintessential Warwick. Are they murder for neckdive on a strap? Andy Irvine seems to play them on his left leg when seated which I don't think I'd like

I actually have 3 of them now as I bought the last natural finish streamer LX4 that thomann had 😁
the streamer is definitely more versatile than the thumb & has a more mellow traditional sound but I love all 3 of my basses.
all of Them balance on the strap perfectly fine,I haven't noticed any neck dive at all, although I use a fairly wide strap.

I think that you should buy one of these:

Why? Well, it's not my money. And I don't have to play it. So, I can safely recommend the prettiest looking Warwick.
It IS a pretty-looking Warwick, there's no doubt about that.

And I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to this thread - I now have two Spector basses. NBD threads to follow... :)

the Stage One NT should be a very nice bass too,i think the only difference is just that it is a neck through instead of a bolt on,get it bought :)

I had a thumb 5er,it was punchy but very small string spacing and had neck dive.i was a little disappointed.
String spacing is 17-18mm I think, a little on the narrow side although I find it OK. The neck through has a broadneck option I think.
Neck dive can be an issue on the bolt on neck 5ers I've heard, although with a decent strap I've not had any problems so far. I'd love to try a broadneck neck through thumb 5er or a streamer stage 1 though.

Well... after all that, in the end I got Spector GAS and got these...

Went off Warwick after I learnt they're basically just copies of a Ned Steinberg Spector design... :P :D ;)

Having just about fought off a bout of P-bass lust, I now seem to be missing the feel & sound of Warwick. I've gone back to 4-strings recently & find my 5-string Corvette a bit of a struggle at the moment, browsing the internet I seem to fancy a 4-string Katana or Infinity but there hardly seem to be any used ones about & new Warwick prices seem absolutely crazy.

Anyone know much about the Katana's & Infinity's? Were they not very popular (I've never seen either in the flesh) or are they so good that no one wants to sell theirs (or even take them out the house)?

Thing is, as basses, they are entirely different animals! If you enjoy the Spector tone, Warwick was probably not for you after all :)

I was being facetious as usual, but you're right... I do enjoy the Spector tone. Though I'm finding that my Legend 5 is capable of many different and varied tones... whether this is down to the Jazz/Humbucker pickup configuration or the Active EQ I've no idea.

A lot of bass players I've met who have onboard preamps tend to find a tone they like then never change the EQ again! I find this a bit strange... surely the whole point of having the option is so you can have lots of different tones at your fingertips? :)

I'd still like to try more Warwicks though, just out of curiosity...
...particularly a Streamer Stage II...
