Roland Rock
"Sansamp" - does it mean 'sans' as in 'without'? Was it designed to be used instead of an amp? Does anyone actually pronounce it the French way, like you would 'Médecins Sans Frontières'?
CamdenRob
I always assumed it meant sans as in "without an amp"...
They do make guitar combos, but they leave the Sansamp name off.

visog
No. paradoxically they do make bass amps - witness the signature dug model which looks pretty tasty: http://www.tech21nyc.com/products/amps/bass/dugvt1000.html
allighatt0r
Yes, but it doesn't say Sansamp on it.

wateroftyne
In France, the SansAmp is marketed as 'WithoutAmp'. Maybe. If it isn't, it should be.
Roland Rock
OK, so it means 'Without Amp'. Brushing aside the fact that a preamp is, at the very least symantically speaking, an amp, what's the rationale behind the name? Is it aimed towards the studio market, saying that it's just as good as a mic'ed up amp?

So you could ditch your amp and go straight into the desk either live or recording. A routine idea now, but quite new at the time. chrismuzz
Maybe they should bring out a head and call it AvecAmp
dincz
"Zonder verstarker" and "bez zesilovače" were probably close contenders but I think "Sansamp" has the edge.

At the time a few tried speaker or amp simulation for recording directly, without an amp, and sounded terrible. Anyone remember the Marshall DRP-1? Sansamp arrived with the first decent sounding units (for guitar).

DaytonaRik
I had a DRP-1 - it needed a lot of EQing to get a good sound out of it. The JMP-1 made huge inroads into the Marshall DI'd sound, especially with the speaker emulation outputs.

'sans' is Middle English word (although borrowed from Old French) dating back to the 14th century. In English, it's pronounced to rhyme with Hans or bans (c.f. 'sans serif font'). Shakespeare: 'All the World's a Stage' monologue from As You Like it
Last scene of all, That ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
Edited October 24, 2014 by cybertect
