AM1
Might not get any thanks here, but Rocco is way too mechical and it just isn't funky, IMO.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56_eUJzWOTg Those clipped grooves are an art form in and of themselves, he has plenty of funk, he just chooses when to unleash it to suit the songs. Listen to that bass and drum interaction at 1:19 onwards - that has the funk!

U.K guy I used to like, Jerome Rimson. You can't ignore Jaco, as you know. You can get great lines from a pick and heavy muting. Anthony Jackson and Bobby Vega... who is great at whatever he does.. Rocco has played some of the funkiest bass lines ever written. but beauty in the eye and all that. jakenewmanbass
Someone not mentioned here yet is Willie Weeks, check out his work on Donny Hathaway Live, to my mind one of the funkiest recordings in existence. Thing is with Willie is that his lines are super musical as well as very funky, and by all accounts he's a lovely guy too, a pal of mine has recorded with him (and Steve Jordan)
lowdown
Jerry Jemmott is well worth a mention
Worth a few bars of 16th note mentions. Great, melodic groover. I might be wrong, but I think Jaco mentioned him as an influence.
