U2 on Jools Holland

I must be getting on a bit cos I thought Bono singing "Every Breaking Wave" was rather impressive.

I haven't watched it yet, though I was a bit peeved when their album appeared on my phone. Maybe I'll give it a listen now after all

On the clip I saw, I thought the bass sounded great. And quite a groovy bassline. Although I didn't think the song sounded particularly memorable.

Did nothing for me.... but I only saw one track and that was enough.
If that is indicative, then wll pass their sell-by date.. but then that seems a theme
on 'Later' these days.

Later was always my favourite show but even I, with my extremey eclectic taste, am finding some of the acts just a bit too average and/ or , unknown. There also is a real lack of rock bands to give a bit of balance. I am sure I will be proved wrong in future episodes, but up to now, just a bit unimpressed

As contentious as Barefaced Cab Handles, but I too like Adam Claytons bass playing. Surprised that he wasn`t using his new Fender Jazz Signature Bass though.

Watched it this afternoon with my 13 year old lad this afternoon. Sam Smith on right after U2... His response:- "wow, I didn't think he'd come on this". I pointed out that U2 are one of the biggest bands in the world. "Did they sing Red Red Wine?"

Slaves were interesting for one song but i can imagine it might get a bit dull after a while. Bonio's voice was sounding bloody good, i have to concur.

I just watched some of it on YouTube. I must have seen a different Bono. The one I saw sounded strained and fragile. What on earth makes him think he can sing slow numbers?

thanks to this thread I've just watched it on the i player, not a big U2 fan but compared to some of the dross around they sounded pretty good to me, thought the Slaves were like a breath of fresh air, but as ever it depends on your own tastes, wouldn't do for us all to like the same thing would it?

I liked the song they did at the end of fridays show, California, nice guitar work from The Edge. I didn`t like the acoustic song though. The problem for me on most of their later albums is they seem to have one or two killer tracks, surrounded by guff.

I struggle to like ageing multi millionaires discussing their difficult creative processes and describing how arduous making an album in lovely studios with the best equipment available was. However, since my unwanted U2 gift arrived I have discovered it contains some drivel but IMO Every Braking Wave is a song crafted simply and cleverly with fantastic vocals that unfortunately demonstrates that the old buggers have sold squillions of albums and have the right to tell my sorry working mans ass to F off with my opinion. I'm not jealous. Honest.

I've never really understood the hate for U2 or Bono, or any band really. U2 are fairly limited musically but good at what they do. They turn out a couple of good songs every album and over the years that's a fair no of good songs and gives a lot of people pleasure. Very few bands really change their style much over the years so why do they get criticism more than others?

got to agree with everything you say there, there's way to much dislike for bands because they are successful, lets face it it's just jealousy, which one of us wouldn't love to be in their position? you might not like their music but as I said earlier it wouldn't do for us all to like the same thing, I can respect someone's music without actually liking it, it's difficult sometimes though, f**cking hate rap

I don't hate anyone or anything Phil.
I've watched U2 live 6-7 times dating back to the Zoo TV tour and the sound, stage etc has always been top drawer.

The one before last (can't remember which now) had Bono marching about the stage in a blind fold attempting to raise awareness for something. I have great respect for any person that uses their position/wealth to help those in need in our greedy world but as he paraded around even Edge/Larry/Adam looked very uncomfortable or even embarrassed on the huge screen close ups.

As for every word being poured over then that's the game they are in and he cannot resist the theatrical musings that get peoples backs up. It seems he always has to revert to Frontman mode before speaking (he admitted as much on the recent Jo Whiley live radio show) when after so many years it would be refreshing to hear Paul not Bono. That's clearly up to him.

All older, richer bands seem to come out with the arduous process guff whilst roaming the globe for expensive producers, studios and inspiration. Sounds like a hard life to me?
Just a thought, an opinion, nothing more.
