Karl Derrick Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 I wondered what everyone's opinions were on the Swedish Hagstrom Basses. I had a couple of vintage Hagstrom guitars in my life, but never a bass. The guitars' build quality was excellent and I found them very good value. Are their basses any good? Karl Quote
Billy Apple Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 I've never played one, but I certainly like the look of the Viking. It seems keenly priced too. Anyone know where these are made? Quote
EliasMooseblaster Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 I've been very pleased with the modern reissue of the HB-8! I've heard various criticisms of the original '60s ones, but I gather they've been addressed in the updated model. Sounds great, plays well - unfortunately it's the only 8-string I've ever come across, so I don't have any reference points to compare it to, but I like it. The only problem I'm having is finding new strings for the bugger! Quote
Billy Apple Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Anyone know what a Resinator fret board is? Quote
gapiro Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 I had an HB-8 Great fun and works well in a power trio. But didn't find a great use otherwise. Quote
Kiwi Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 They reissued their Super Swede copy of a jazz bass a few years back, the same one used by Rutger Gunnarsson in Abba. I'd be really keen to try one as it sounded great when used on some of their recordings. Quote
blue Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 I think they make a good product, however the body style is not for me. Blue Quote

skankdelvar Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 (edited)
Anyone know what a Resinator fret board is?
A composite made from paper (or cellulose) and phenolic resin. Variations of this are 'ebanol' and 'Richlite', the latter being CF Martin's name for the stuff. Played a Richlite boarded Martin DRS1 on one occasion; it felt and sounded fine. Also read a review where a luthier refretted a Richlite board and said it was easier to work than 'real' wood. Number6 Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Wunjo have a HB4 in at the moment.....tempted! Quote
HowieBass Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Regarding Resinator material - I've got two ebonol fingerboard basses and can't see why some people are so against it; it's hard wearing but in any case strings don't come into contact with it on a fretted instrument. If it imparts any tone to a bass (assuming fingerboards have that effect) then I'd guess it's more like hard maple or ebony than say rosewood. Quote
timmo Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 I was so close to buying a Viking, but the Warwick Streamer PS LX4 came up for £500, so i bought one of those instead. I will get around to buying one in around 9 months time when i have saved up Quote
