[sharedmedia=core:attachments:174869] Good evening, all...
I have decided to promote, each in turn, the compositions presented in the monthly BC Composition Challenge. I shall give my own, personal, view of the piece, in the hope that at least some will be inspired to give the work a listen, and perhaps a vote as their favourite. All the pieces can be heard here...

A solo cello; we are greeted with a 'Dawn of Man' slow, majestic melody. A pregnant pause, then brass enter, repeating and reinforcing the theme. Now a flute, taking a different direction over the theme. A growling sustained bass pedal note adds both menace and promise as the strings continue the melody, fleshed out with subtlety. The orchestration deepens, adding counter-layers over a dark, brooding roll grumbling under all, almost subsonic. We await in a false sense of comfort as the under-stated tension is quietly enhanced. The climax passes, the melodies return to their origins, the rumbling maintains a suspense as all fade away into the distance.
Much work has gone into the realism of the orchestral instruments, with fine use of dynamique swelling and subsidence. There is no discernable beat, as such; the rhythm is majestuous, almost 'Pomp and Circumstance'. There is gravity, in its widest sense, here; an impression of great weight coupled with solemnity. The weave of the theme lends itself amply to both its own justification and its role as support for the counterpoint, as a tapestry is embroided. A very well thought-out, deft work.
