Mexicola
I was wondering if there is a pedal that 'dirties up' your tone a bit by adding upper harmonics. Not necessarily a gain pedal but a pedal that specifically adds extra harmonics and overtones to your sound? Does such a pedal exist? cheddatom
would you not just use a pitch shifter/harmoniser like a whammy or EHX POG?
Beer of the Bass
What you're describing sounds like the Aphex Exciter or BBE Sonic Maximizer. There are pedal versions of each; I haven't tried them but both are designed to generate extra upper harmonics to liven up your signal. Lozz196
Might be worth getting in touch with DHA (Dave Hall Amps) as his pedals seem to add some nice harmonics on the lower gain settings.
Happy Jack
You're sure you mean "harmonics"? The Fishman Fission allows you to add an octave up, a 5th above that, and a further octave. Also to "dirty it up" with some distortion. It's not harmonics though ...
Ben Jamin
Here's a explanation of overtones and harmonics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overtone Like BotB said BBE and Aphex make good exciter pedals. Another good bass-specific one is the Basswitch Sonic Spark http://lehle.com/EN/...tch-Sonic-Spark Edit: found a good demo! 0175westwood29
i used to have a darkglass harmonics booster, pretty much did exactly what your saying you need, added no dirt to the signal but added a bit of a bite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMflmQIrFe8 andy

They aren't quite there tone wise but the idea behind them is what I had in mind. Andy, how much did you end up selling the Harmonic Booster on for? I was looking at the Dave Hall stuff a few days ago wondering if the 'Q mid' controls do something along the lines of what Im looking for to tweak my tone slightly. dannybuoy
I have an Aphex Xciter. It's good for making dead strings sound like new! I don't really use it much though, so could be tempted to sell it if you wanted to try one out.
Mexicola
Thanks Danny, I think I prefer the idea of it to how it actually sounds in application. I would be tempted if it caught me off guard one day in the 'for sale' forum though.

It is an overdrive and distortion pedal... but forget the OD and Dist modes... if you use it in Clean mode, the drive won't have any effect, but you will be able to use the 2-band EQ *and* the Attack switch. The Attack switch adds this kind of dirty overtones and it's really cool. Try it! Pretty cheap pedals too. Mexicola
Sounds cool. I've seen those pedals going for cheap before without giving them a second look as well.
cheddatom
I see, I'd misunderstood what you were after. I wonder if some fairly heavy compression on a high pass filter would be what you need? It'd bring out all the natural harmonics from your bass. Then just blend this with the clean signal. That's how I do it in the studio anyway Edited October 30, 2014 by cheddatom
