....Ideal sound to me, and I got no idea what gear he used, would be the sound Tiran Porter got on early 70s Doobies tracks like Long Train Running....
For the Doobies gigs I saw in 1973 he was using an Ampeg SVT and 810 cab.

This one always does it for me

However, when soloed it does not sound good to my ears; context is everything.

The tone and groove on this one is always a pleasure

Or the same again with Pino @ 6:15

More Pino

And finally (trust me I could go on further) the wonderful Tony Levin: tasteful phrasing; tone to die for and just sooo cool!

For me, Chris Squire's sound has always been one which makes me go 'wow'. I only have two Yes cds on my ipod, the first two LPs, and the bass is superb. It changed over the years but always kept that growl. I never tried to copy it in any way shape or form and the only Yes cover I have ever played was Wonderous Stories which I played on guitar not bass.

My 'go to' tone was always Jack Bruce's sound on the Cozy Powell LP 'Over The Top'. His intro solo on Sweet Poison was an unconscious reference point for years and my second bass was an Aria SB700 because it was as close as I could get to the SB1000 Bruce was using at that time. In 1986, I then got the Percy Jones/John Giblin/Wal bug and bought the Wal Fretless I still use as my only electric bass today. My sound now is probably a kind of Bruce/Giblin mix with strong references to Steve Swallow in my electric Jazz playing.

Other bass sounds that I love include Jaco, Bruford era Jeff Berlin (hate his sound now), Jimmy Johnson, Steve Swallow and Anthony Jackson. I never really tried to emulate the tone of any of this group, though.

Oh yes indeed! http://www.youtube....h?v=zGRx5Ja2stc

Although Neil Murray (another bassist with a monster tone) does a good job here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkU7AYhRULs

John Deacon for me, especially on some of the earlier Queen stuff. Nothing radically different or innovative but he just gets such a fat sound man! Really complements the subtle but sweet lines he plays as well; his playing was one of the main things that made me pick up a bass in the first place.

To each their own, I guess - I've spent years trying to imitate that tone. One Gibson and a slightly dirty valve amp later and I think I'm finally getting close!
It's a tone that, with the rest of the band, sounds to die for, certainly my favourite JE tone. I was very surprised what it sounded like isolated.

Ryan Martinie. His sound blows me away everytime I hear it. I know he uses a thumb 5 stringer but that's where my knowledge ends.

I think it's just the Warwick into an Avalon U5A these days, but he's previously used Ampeg SVT 4-pros.

For me it's got to be Justin Chancellor on Tool's 10000 Days, particularly the clean sound on Jambi. The overdriven sound on that album is great too.

+1

That is exactly the sound I have always had in my head as the perfect sound. Not for everyone, of course, but for me it's the definitive bass sound.

Not really a big JE fan usually but to me that sounds superb in isolation.

Listening to Chris Squire, Fragile or the Yes Album through proper old school hi-fi :gas:

I am definetly not a Jazz Bass Guy, but Geddy Lee's tone is absolutely great. As far as I know he uses Tech21 RPI and Orange-Amps. Not to forget his unique right hand one finger technique.

With you both guys... I'm really getting into the quintisential bass grit tone at the mo'

My reference standard is Squire's mighty HoTS tone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwhMw5lwzNg
