The old 'one bass must go' dilemma, please help...!

Mrs Chiliwailer and I have been looking at bills and budgets for next year, it's looking quite likely that a bass may have to go. Shame, as I just bought a lovely new one recently and was feeling smug and contented with the current basses on my wall.

I know for sure that my Modulus and Jazz Bass are going nowhere. Odd really as I'm mostly a Precision player, but they are killers and are very useful and hard to replace. If i sell my new CS 64 Precision then I'm going to be sore that I dont have that classic sound, and I'll be even more annoyed as this 64 is the nicest Fender Precision I've had in my hands for a seriously long time, and it's the first time I haven't missed my original 64 P Bass I sold a few years back. But it's white, and I'm still struggling to get my head around that, I never did get on with white basses. So this bass is surely substance over style for me.

I could sell my CS 55 Precision, the bass that was proper love at first sight. It sounds HUGE, bigger than other passive Fenders I've owned, it's a monster and even better, it's only 7.5lbs in weight which is great as I have neck and back issues. Plus, it's black, ash and maple, mmmmm..... But, it's a killer sound that isn't going to be as useful as a classic Precision for me.

Or, I could sell them both and buy a Mike Lull P Bass that is available. Super light weight, amazing tone and black! Could I turn this negative experience of possibly needing to sell a bass into a fun NBD experience that softens the blow? I like Lull basses but haven't played this particular one yet, plus I may not need to actually sell for a few months so it's all just a thought for now. One that needs a post like this for some friendly advice and thought provoking reading matter!

Cheers!

What's more important to you? Being able to put food on the table or "having the right tone, man"?

I bet there are a fair few members of this forum who would have trouble answering that question.

Sell them all and buy a Mex P. Financial hardship's no laughing matter. What's more important to you? Being able to put food on the table or "having the right tone, man"?

Luckily my financial position isn't as extreme as your comment.

Ha ha ha I know!

Being redundant at the moment's making me put things into perspective. Didn't mean to sound quite so utilitarian!

Sorry to hear that, know how it feels.

But yeah, it does make scaling down more appealing, just perhaps not a Mex?!

Cheers, there is some good logic in that. I'll seriously miss that huge sound, I guess that is what's making it a hard choice, glad I got some time to think this one through.

Seriously though, I'd have kept my old Fender logo Squier bass if it hadn't been too heavy for me!

I appreciate your thoughts

No food on the table = lose weight, plus you keep basses. Win/win situation?

I reckon if you want a Precision because of the classic tone, keep the one that gives you a classic tone and sell the other one.

This makes sense if you can cope without the 55.

How does the sound of the 55 compare with your 64 Precision and Jazz basses?
Is the tone similar to the neck pick up on the Jazz, or more like the Precision?
Or is it so different that you cannot get close with a J or split coil P bass?

Also, if a bass 'plays like butter' then keep it and spread it on your toast in the morning ;-)

Cheers. The 55 has something very special and unique, it can't be replicated on the Jazz or 64 P Bass. The way that bass fills the room is extraordinary, I love the way it alters the way I think about playing. Sad thing is, I hardly ever manage to get out and play anymore due to health issues, though if that ever changed I'd love a bass like the 55 to use sometimes in a band situation. For now, it's great for playing along to old records like Neil Young or Creedence.

To be able to make any serious decision I think we need some pictures of the basses in question ;)

Haha, good point Chris! Here is a link to the CS porn thread, it's on the October 11th post.

Sell the 55 and live with a P that sounds great but isn't the right colour.
Or sell the 64 and live with a P that also sounds great and IS the right colour, but doesn't have the exact tone you want.
Bear in mind that 99% of your band's punters (and your band probably) wouldn't spot the difference in tone between the two anyway.

Definitely keep the '55, it sounds like it's a very special one. I get the feeling you would regret selling that one the most.

Lull's are excellent basses and also very light in weight by all accounts..

You hit the nail on the head, twice. Cheers!

I'd love to hear the 55, having never played a CS model.
I have a 'customised' 63 jazz that sounds immense and I know what you mean about filling the room.
I've been unsuccessfully trying to find that huge tone in a lighter weight bass for years - even other pre CBS Js don't have it IME.
I don't like the tone from split coil Precisions and I wonder if the single coil 55 would sound closer to my Jazz's neck pick up.
Your 55 is absolutely gorgeous in my eyes and if it sounds as special as you say, I hope you keep it....

Otherwise I might not be able to resist :gas:

I'm not sure what it is about the 55, is the light weight swamp ash body? The stacked pickup with less mids than a split P? The fact that the maple neck is chunky? A tree made by pixies? All or none of the above? I have no idea, but would love to know. It'd be interesting to play another next to mine. Bassgear and GAK both have one if you're nearby.

I hope I can keep it too mate. This thread may just be making things worse....

Keep the white 64. Aside from the colour it`s probably of more use to you. Though saying that, can`t the sound of the 55 be tamed with eq? I have to do similar with my 78 as it is a very aggresive sound, but can dumb it down somewhat.
