leschirons
Groove. Now there's a word that gets used a lot by bass players and drummers. So, what is the one song that really sums it up for you? I'm interested to find out if groove actually means different things to different people or whether we all agree on what it is but simply feel it in different music. For me, the song is not even one I particularly think is great but this is about "the groove" so, with a simple (but very well played) bass line, a little percussion, 3 chords on the keyboards and a few other bits 'n' pieces, it's Paradise by Sade' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KuKmjikoQc Edited November 3, 2014 by leschirons
JTUK
I'd offer Toto's Georgie Porgie live version as one that many would know but my next project band is going to be based around this sort of thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDFersmE8QU as if ever I waver decding to do it...this gets me back. lowdown
Lordy Lordy, I wouldn't know where to start with this. So many over the years. Today's choice would be anything from the 'Nightfly' album (Mr Donald Fagen). Tomorrows choice would more than likely be different. FuNkShUi
The Roots - The Seed 2.0 Really simple bassline, but i love it Edit: Anything By Jamiroquai with Stuart Zender at the helm had groove IMO Edited November 4, 2014 by FuNkShUi

JamesBass
Can. Of. Worms But, as a good definition of groove, I'd say Pino's playing on Voodoo by D'Angelo is as pretty good as you'll get.

Bassnut62
Defo a can of worms here....anyway here's my two penny's worth........ Poet by Sly Stone.....it's such a sexy groove and has some of the best lyrics ever written about being an artist IMO. I love the rising high-on-neck bass line (or maybe it's an octave down guitar) towards the end of the song. In case you're wondering what he's actually saying, here are the lyrics: My only weapon is my pen And the frame of mind I'm in. I'm a songwriter, A poet. I'm a songwriter, A poet. And the things I flash on Everyday They all reflect In what I say. I'm a songwriter I'm a poet I'm a songwriter, Oh yeh a poet. Edited November 4, 2014 by Bassnut62
leschirons
Well, looking at the replies so far (I wasn't familiar with two suggestions but have just listened to them) we're all sitting on the same bus at the moment. Every one of the choices makes you need to tap feet / hands / bob your head and just generally move and get into it. I had expected to come across a few that might make me ask "where's the groove in this?" as some folks may view things differently but, not yet so maybe groove is a universal thing that we all agree on after all. xgsjx
The "Groove" isn't a genre or style of music, it fits in many genres & styles. You get a fast groove, a funky groove, a slow groove & so on. The groove is what makes people move. It's about the locking together & making the listener feel the rhythm. The first song that came to my mind when I read the title was this... http://youtu.be/RDxSXvL9ZFs But tomorrow it might be something different. Lynottfan
Dancing in the moon light by my man Phil is a great choice, Waiting for an alibi is my fave for how I like the rock groove, but the one song that really comes to mind for when thinking about it straight away is Ai No Corrida by Quincy Jones, the original take with Louis Johnson on the Stingray bass, MAN dat is groove!
