Prompted this morning whilst watching a little rush about Geddys name

I know the man himself is unique and the name is actually a nick name but I have never heard it used elsewhere.

Is it unique or are there lots of Geddys I just haven't heard about ??

Can't say I know many Geddy's. In fact I can't think of another one off hand.

Oh and found this when I googled: http://www.babynames...m/meaning/Geddy

Hmm thought he was born Gary Lee Weinrib

He's unique in that no other people can play like that, sing and play foot pedals all at the same time! I'd say he's one in a million!!!

The story I heard, many years ago, was a variation on that theme, and that his mother had a heavy Yiddish accent, thus making "Gary" sound like "Geddy".

I believe that his Mother was Polish and pronounced 'Gary' as 'Geddy'. Could be be wrong though.

Correct. She couldn't pronounce Gary.

Also Lifeson is a literal translation of Zivojinovich which is Alex's real Serbian name.

Yep. It is all explained in the rather excellent "Beyond the lighted stage" rockumentary. B)

He wasn't christened Geddy - it is a nickname used by family and friends - and even by Dirk himself.

I'm sure it was his mother.... but that's certainly close enough :)

I worked with a Giddy, which was short for Geddes, therefore I think it should have been pronounced Geddy, but due to our Doric twang his name was spoken Giddis. Oh well Doric lesson over for today lol
