HowieBass
Comfortable bass strap so you get used to playing with the bass whilst standing, if you're hoping to join a band...
Black Coffee
Patience, and a decent taste in music............ But seriously, stick at the frustrating stage when you feel as if you are getting nowhere and all of a sudden one day it will click. The biggest hurdle is getting by this point. You can buy the bass the amp the tuner the tutor but you still gotta want it. Sounds like you've got everying to get going, so all the very best on your bass journey. stingrayPete1977
That bass will see you right forever if needs be, good choice. Amps wise depends what you want to do with it and what you want to spend? A Mark Bass or Genz Benz combo used from this very site would suit home use and pub gigs without breaking your back! If I was starting from scratch now id buy a small class D amp and one 1x12 speaker cab, you can take the head to practice rooms or use it with head phones, use the cab for home, practice rooms and small gigs then if things go well buy a second matching 1x12. Oh and welcome

A total raw newbie no musical experience but the will to get playing bass as best I can with years of a journey ahead! Thanks for info on cabs and amp this will be a 2015 purchase oh and a strap ! Is there a particular strap to look for? Sorry so many questions !!! Thanks again
Gomez68
Hi gelfin... Gas? Ha go on.... ? Cheers
stingrayPete1977
Make sure your strap is nice and wide, padded ones are comfy but I find they can get a bit warm and sweaty! After Christmas is a good time for bargains used or new.
jmchich
GAS is gear acquisition syndrome, a painful yearning that if surrendered to leads to cupboards full of pedals that never get used and basses that sit in racks not getting played. Personally i'm GASsing for a valve amp right now. It's that "I don't need it but it'd be cool to own..."feeling

gelfin
You will succumb to it. By next year you will have a P bass, some exotic fretless, an active bass. And looking to have a custom built bass. An all valve head and at least two 4 X 10 cabs as well as various combo's and an essential wireless system. Dad3353
For getting ahead with a flying start, here's a bass method which has proved itself to thousands. Extra bonus: it's all in standard notation, which will liberate you from tab forever..! It's easy, done this way, and you'll be ahead of the game and set up for life. There are many other bass methods, of course; this one works, it's the real deal. Not expensive, either. seashell
Welcome to the wonderful world of bass playing Gomez. It will bring you joy! IMHO you'll find that your tutor will be worth their weight in gold. I don't think I would ever have kept up with the practice if it hadn't been for my tutor. I didn't want to turn up for a lesson and not be any better than I was the week before. Sounds like you're off to a great start. Keep us posted. :-)
Bobthedog
I am a 8 month old newby. The essentials are: n+1 guitars where n is the number of guitars you currently have Numerous cables whilst you figure out what are the best Several tuners while you decide which ones to trust Several metronomes including at least two drum machines to ensure good timing Several straps whilst you decide which ones are the most comfortable Numerous and many effects pedals whilst you work out how to get a good tone (tip, it is from the fingers) Several different amps whilst you decide what one is best for the tone you think you want now (see previous point) Several books for you to learn one tune from A PC /Mac Audio interface for when you start your home studio including different software whilst you decide which one works best for you Some studio monitors that are too big for your desk. A portable mixing desk should you need to start mixing whilst you learn a minor pentatonic scale A foldable trolley to carry your amp to the gigs you have not yet done A music stand for all the books you have learnt the one tune from Different guitar stands including wall mounts whilst you decide what works best for you and can hold n+1 guitars An open ended wallet and finally An understanding and patient partner. Other than that, I think you are done. NB all of the above are based on real life situations and any connections to the author are intentional. funkgod
Hello and again welcome, I was just thinking amp speaker wise for you, im guessing funds wise while you are finding your feet you need to be carefull, so ok, i think a great little combo for cheap money that i think most would agree as.. a work horse, reliable, tank built, moveable, is cheap ( see below) plenty around to choose from loud enough for small gigs without being di'd get good enough tones from slap to warm blues built in x over in case you want to broaden out the sound a patch loop for effects... (so you can set your tone from your bass via the eq on the amp before you send it to the effects, rather than have the effects in line (on the floor) before the eq on the amp so the eq then is messing with the effect sound as well !) has cct/overload protection so you wont (unless you try hard) blow the speaker which i think is why there is still alot around today is the good old underated peavey TNT bass combo. a preff for me would be too make sure it has a black widdow speaker in it, some do, some dont ( a badge at the bottom of the grill will tell you if it came from the factory with one or not. keep your eyes on local ebay gumtree etc, and hay when you want to upgrade sell it for what you got it for !! win win I think this will serve you well for a while, Good luck and enjoy the ride Info,,,, http://assets.peavey.com/literature/manuals/80370367.pdf some for sale http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR2.TRC1.A0.H0.Xpeavey+tnt&_nkw=peavey+tnt&_sacat=0 seen them sold as cheap as £43 !!! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peavey-TNT-130-bass-combo-/191384785306?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2c8f6c119a Edited November 6, 2014 by funkgod
timmo
Maybe try different tutors? I had an excellent tutor when i first started.I didn`t know any better. After 18 months or so, he moved away so i had to find a new one from this very forum. I realise there is a massive difference between the two. I think i had a lot of luck with him moving away, and forcing me to find a new one. I am not saying yours is no good, but maybe skip a few weeks with the original, and try to slip in a few lessons with a new one just to compare, That way, you may save 18 months of being with the wrong one. For example, i find the one i have now who specialises in bass only with foundation degrees and a BA in bass studies has so much more knowledge than the guitarist, who teaches bass to RGT grade 8. He costs me an extra £5 a lesson, and a 60 mile round trip but i have gained so much more in 8 lessons than i did in 18 months
Geek99
I don't use an amp - I just use Jamup on my iPhone so it's totally silent plus you can play along with music and record the results. It also has a metronome and a tuner

bassmachine2112
Hi,welcome to the low end world of bass. Get along to jam nights and play with everyone you can, playing live and thinking on the spot is the best practice.Learn to wing it. GAS is on it,s way, slowly at first until it,s a raging thirst like being in the desert with a horse with no name. Have a ball ,it,s fun and enjoy. Ps Orange amps are good as well as rickenbackers, musicman,Usa peavey,s,thunderbirds, maple necks, strings and things, pedals and the list constantly refreshes itself but a bdi21 is worth it,s weight in gold. ladywithabass
Yep Peavey TNT I play one, a second hand one. I like it a lot and they are very strong, bit heavy though if you have to go on a bike.
