Am I the only one here who finds a PJ combination unsatisfactory?
Agreed - I only use the neck pick up on my Jazz, but I prefer a Precision body.
Nobody makes a Jazz with a Precision body, other than G&L AFAIK and I didn't like the JB-2 when I had one.

I like the Jazz for its neck profile and versatility in pickup options. I like the sound of the Precision for its mids.
Whichever suits you is the best one :)

Squier P-bass Special :). Jazz neck, Precision body, PJ pups and cheap as chips. I fitted SD Quarter Pound pups in about 15 mins -> monster bass and still dead cheap

... but no 'J' neck p/up. I suppose one could be routed in, though..?

Well it is a compromise but you get the 'best' bits ergonomically and a decent flavour of each sonically :)

One of each, the only answer really.

Yep, that was my answer. No particular favourite has emerged, even though I've mostly played a P and have only had a J for a few years.

Whatever you decide, make sure you play the actual bass you're going to buy. Big variance in build quality and general 'feel' , esp at the cheaper end of the range.

Not for me :(

What you need is a bass with a J bridge pup before a MM pup then a P pup then a J bridge pup, then 5 minutes between each song to dial in the right sound for the number coming up.

And a back brace to support the monster plank that would be the result?
