kulit17
Out of curiosity, who bought the '84 fretless from Bassdirect in 2013?
I believe some guy in talkbass bought it. I can't recall the name...... Were you the previous owner?
Matt Golgotha
I tried it out, and it sold during the day whilst I was trying to scrape the cash together to buy it I'm in the process of commissioning a clone of it with Electric Wood, but just wondered if this one was still in the UK. CamdenRob
Morning gents, Noticed a random abnormality that could only possibly be of any interest to those in this thread... There is a lovey fretless mk1 for sale on Andy baxters website and the DI / jack are the opposite way round to my mk3, ie. mine has the DI nearest the strap pin. Which way round is yours?
kulit17
Rob, it's normal and not an abnormality. For an Mk I and Mk II, the typical electronics layout is the jack is closest to the strap pin. For an Mk III, the layout is a bit different since the body contours differently (it'll be the same for a 4, 5, or a 6 string Mk III), so the DI is closest to the strap pin.
This was build for me as one of a pair in olive ash fretted/fretless. This was the first of the two I had made, the fretted one was made the following year. I bl**dy loved this bass, but because I migrated to playing exclusively 5 strings it was a luxury I couldn't afford to keep just for sentimental reasons, so I part traded it here for a Lakland fretless. It had a beautiful tone, I don't think the Soundcloud clip on his site anywhere near does it justice... It's a bit pricy I think.... it'll probably get bought and shipped to America sadly... I sold the fretted one a long time ago, as it never played quite as well to my mind. I've got some pics of them together somewhere when I first took delivery of the fretted one, I'll dig them out and scan them if anyone is interested? I had intended to order an olive ash Mk3 5 string fretless a couple of years back, but I still haven't managed to raise the cash .
mikeswals
Yes the MkIII DI cannon is mounted 'backwards' from any MkI and MkII that I've seen. Edited March 1, 2015 by mikeswals
jdel
I'm off to pickup my first ever Wal tomorrow morning, and was just browsing this thread to tease me a bit. Now I'm pretty sure i will never be able to sleep tonight. Took me ages to find a second hand Wal at the same moment as I have cash in hands, and now I know why Wal are so scarce on the second hand market when you see the collections posted in the previous page ! Some pictures really made me swear all of the words i know of, I even made up some new ones on the way. Anyway... I'm delighted to finally get my hands on a Wal tomorrow, but what I really am, is gutted, that I will only own one of them !

I recently managed to snap up a gorgeous 1987 mk1 custom 21 years after I foolishly sold the previous one I owned. I often wonder what happened to that bass. The photographs I had of it have long since disappeared. It was in a proper old skool full flight case that weighed an absolute ton! A guy came to collect it from my parents house in Nottingham around 1994ish for the princely sum of £560 if I recall correctly. Anyway, I won't make the mistake again and I'm sure you'll feel the same once once you've picked up your beauty. All the best with it

jdel
Here it is ! It has been played quite a bit, scratches and used finish here and there, cigarette burn next to the headstock, and proper mank when I got it. After a few hours of dismantling every thing, cleaning with a wet cloth, I strung it with ernie ball 45-105, set the neck relief, string height, intoniation... and it's rocking ! What kind of finish does have Wals on the body ? It doesn't feel like the neck which is poly for sure. It's more matte, with a satin feel, but is it poly ? In other words, can I can use my usual Dunlop formula 65 polish to give it a wee clean and buff ? mikeswals
Is that the 2002 MkII that was just on craigslist.de? Looks fantasic! The old ones had heavily glossed necks, but I think around 2001-ish they changed to a thinner satin finish on the neck, kinda like what's on the body.
