Great basses... congratulations.
I just bought an old Wal of mine back, it's a november 87 Shedua fretless..
To be honest though it's not really intended to be a keeper..
I have "problems" with fretless basses which have the dots on the lines along the side, I want to have the dots in the "regular" position like on a fretted bass.
It confuses me when I'm playing and I'm a bit lost on the neck..
So actually the plan is to trade this in if possible for a Wal fretless with the dots between the lines..
There's no hurry since I have other fretless basses but if the "right" fretless comes along I wouldn't hesitate.
I took some pictures and recorded a short YT-clip (only the back pick-up (position 4, my favourite))

If you like the bass except for the side dots, why not get a good luthier to change the dots? They could add dark wood (ebony?) where the current dots are and add new white dots 'between the frets'. Would be the simplest solution, rather than trust to another bass that may not play as well for you

You know, I never really had Wal GAS before, but looking through this thread I've noticed that they actually look really really elegant, sophisticated and just classy. And I don't really like black basses either but for some reason black Wals look the sex!
Shouldnt have looked at this thread :)

That could be a solution but I don't like modifying these fine basses..
I think the easiest solution is to get back to a Pro-fretless with one pick-up (I used to have one but sold it because I enjoyed Pedulla basses for a while) since those Pro-basses seem to have those dots on my preferred place.
Also my eyesight isn't getting better so I need all the possible help I can get..

Hi All...Finally getting around to posting here after lurking over the years. I own a broad range of basses, but thought this would be a good place to start posting... :)

Here's my '82 fretted MK1 that I picked up late last year. Imbuya facings with an Indian rosewood board. Original brown Wal case still intact as well. The previous owner had not used it much over the last 20 years, and very little use prior to that it seems, so in excellent original condition. I had played one back around '86 but didn't like the size of the neck profile having been bought up on a 60's Rickenbacker 4001. 25 years later it certainly didn't feel as uncomfortable, and I am still impressed with the feel, build, not to mention the tone(s) that one can coax from this bass!

I have to say that didn't sound particularly Wal like, and I don't think it was the 'Argos catalogue advert" song choice either! The Thumb in the Incognito video sounded better, and I never thought I'd say that! But the Wal could have been anything, I just wasn't hearing that characteristic sound there.

looking through all of the wal posts has gven me terrible gas for a wal :)

I would love to get a 5 string wal .

I played chrisb 's 5 string wal a while back , that was a beautiful bass.

I think that i would have to sell / part x everything that i own to get my hands on a wal.

.........one day :)

Well I've finally got myself a Wal fretless.

Only taken me something like 20 years (not the build time, just the time it's taken me to actually get my butt in gear and order one :)). Anyway here's a pic Paul sent me prior to pickup.

Picked up from Paul at Wal HQ on Saturday... Just want to say what a top guy Paul is. Kindly showed me around his workshop demonstrating to me how the instruments were made and answering my dumb questions and my gushing at some of the instruments on show or my excitment of seeing the Wal twin neck template (yes sad I know, but last time I saw an actual Wal twin neck up close was Jonas Hellborg's, and that was a long long time ago) :)

Beautiful!

You are going to love that bass. The sound and the ergonomics. The Mark IIIs are the most comfortable basses I've ever played. Perfect balance, weight, positioning.

Wow!!! Absolutely beautiful - the basses coming out of Paul's shop are simply fantastic - testament to his skills and extraordinary attention to detail. As an owner (of a 6 I can'tplay) I would say that, but in all seriousness, new Wals deserve serious consideration from anybody in the market for the higher expression of the bass building art. Purpleblob - yours is a fabulous example!

The new ones certainly display perfection in build quality (above the old ones), from what I've seen in every pic I've seen so far. Everything matches so perfectly.
I sort-of do hate to admit that, but Paul is doing better.

Someday I hope to get a new MkIII 4 string from him.

Guys thanks for the kind words.

So far I have nothing but glowing things to say about the quality, the look, the feel and the sound of this instrument. You're absolutely spot on AndroWal, the ergonomics and the balance, weight etc. make this the most comfortable instrument I own (I admit I'm in the honeymoon period at the moment so I probably would say this :)).

lozbass, totally agree with you. Paul is producing some awesome instruments. Also if you talk to Paul you get the feeling that he's somebody who really cares about what he's doing and strives to produce the best.

Whilst I was at the workshop Paul appeared to be putting the finishing touches on, what I think was a flamed maple bodied, MK1 - it was absolutely stunning.

Anyway, I suppose I'd better start saving for a fretted MKIII next :)
