I don't watch much tv but I'm already sick of the supermarket christmas ads and it's not even December. Christmas is my favourite time of year and these money grabbing *$&! bags really do make it that much less special when it finally arrives . It's always been my favourite time of the year too. I've always hated the commercialisation of it, ever since I was a child, this year though it's gotten out of all proportions, the supermarkets must be spending absolutely horrendous and frankly disgusting amounts of money on the TV campaigns. Our old CRT TV broke about five/six years ago. At first I thought it was a great opportunity to buy a new flatscreen TV, but when I started shopping around there were so many choices and options that I never got around to deciding. After a few weeks I found I no longer missed watching the same old stuff and had loads more spare time. Then, as iPlayer and other 'on demand' services became more established it became easier to watch specific stuff at a time convenient to me, especially after I bought an iPad . . . Plus I save a handy £140 (or whatever it is now) each year on a TV licence (which paid for the iPad and more!) Really, there can be life after television. Why not give it a try? Granted his show often showcases some fantastically diverse acts, that element is great.... But the Jules jumping on his piano to play boogie woogie at any opportunity, hogging the limelight just makes me cringe...... The news years eve show with that daft get with a head like a clock ??? Just does me head in. I go through phases were I am completely turned off by tv and really see the beauty in making you own entertainment, I wonder if I would be doing my family, my kids an injustice or a favour by removing it from the house completely. I am torn by the fact that there are many educational elements to tv aswell as incredible documentaries, dramas and some funny funny people..... But the rubbish which fills the spaces between the good stuff is controlling and literally brain numbing. Most of which insults our intelligence. What passes for entertainment is diabolical, the regurgitation of the same vote off format tv is tired yet they still churn out show after show. Injustice or a kindness? Any veiws on this? I suppose for JH and the band, just a case of turn up and look cheesy in a Christmas way, or at least get one arm in view. Like or dislike Jools Holland, he has managed to keep a Big Band regularly in TV and Radio broadcast work, yearly tours in the UK and overseas. Annual album releases, all this, consistently over a thirty year period. Personally I take my hat off to him, he has kinda of earned his celeb status. (all in my humble opinion of course). [/quote] I agree with pretty much all of this. And I quite like Christmas ads. Particularly perfume ads. [/quote] +1 - thank goodness for the mute button - can silence all of the ads when watching TV in real-time; on the PVR the 30sec skip button is even better! [/quote] Spot on mate. His versatility (ability to play the same boogie-woogie sh*te along to any song) is frankly annoying. Mostly I wish he would just present acts on his show rather than sabotage them. I'll bet a lot of acts cringe at the prospect, but ultimately go along with it for the tv exposure and kudos. Agree with what you say about tv too. I could do without and have done in the past for about 4 years. The family would probably riot though, so it stays, but no 'reality' shows. Mainly because all the good things you rightly mention about TV are available online, so all you lose is the dross and there is no longer any temptation or even possibility to just slump in front of the telly and suck up whatever crap it is spouting at the time. I do agree that mr holland has done remarkably well And there is obviously a market for it, but it's just not for me..... Personally I think that tyre is a very large proportion of the public who will believe something is good simply because they are told it is. in the same context I can't stand and refuse to listen to jo whiley and crew. Th bbc says its good so it must be good. Er nope. I think the shame of it is is that bands/ musicians can be made or broke because of the view of this.
