Graham
I'm sure it's been remarked on before, but how much fun are the songs from Grease? I've started learning a couple (Summer Nights and You're The One I Want), as they're just so enjoyable to play. I've never seen the film, so are there other songs in it with great basslines?
fingerz
Yeh the theme tune 'Grease' by Franki Valli is a wicked tune with a hip bass line. Check that one out. I always think of it as a 'mans bass part'. !
Graham
Holy moly, that's not an easy one I've added it to the list though
Graham
I doubt I'd be able to persuade the band to do any of these as odds are we'd need more instrumentation (keys, sax et) and a female vocal for the duets. Would love to give one or two a shot though
chris_b
I learnt the songs from Grease a few years ago, as an exercise in playing something out of the ordinary for me. Get the CD. It's got the cream of LA's ! st call session players on it, with the likes of David Hungate and Max Bennett on bass.
billfaro
Did you know. David Hungate. from Toto played the bass line on the original "You're the One That I Want" recording. Mind you this guy is still big on the sessions scene.
Karl Derrick
YTOTIW is a fantastic bassline and great fun to play. I had a bit of a job learning how to hit the 'dead' (choked) notes before each of the notes of the main riff, but got there in the end. A really percussive, perky, driving bassline. ern500evo
Used to do Born to hand jive in a previous covers band. We didn't have a sax but rocked it up a bit and the guitarist filled in the sax parts. Used to go down really well. Some great tracks to play on that soundtrack! Funky Dunky
YTOTIW is an awesome bassline! I love the little snap to the notes, the fills and feel of it are just so much fun to play. While we're at it, I recommend Neil Jason's wicked bassline from Fame as a fun line to play. Irene Cara's vocals disappear when I hear the song, Jason's bass part leads the song for me. Bassman Steve
Some years ago I played in the 'pit' band for a school's production of Grease. I say pit but they wanted us to be visible so we were on a minstrels gallery over the back of the stage. It was an independent school with many wealthy parents sending their kids there. One of them (in America) crated up their original Wurlitzer oil-lit jukebox and shipped it over and had it collected 2 weeks later - just to appear on the stage. Anyway, I have to agree that all the songs are great fun to play, all the more so with an ensemble cast belting them out.
FrankDeets
I like some of the songs but I did the musical once and it was a little different so I suggest learning the song individually.
scalpy
Doing 2 weeks of grease next year and they've paid the surcharge to do the film version, great news as without it you aren't allowed to do your the one that I want. BrunoBass
I watched Grease last night on TV. I’ve seen it many times, in fact I saw it on it’s original cinema release in 1978 when I was nine, but not since I was a kid. Several things struck me: all the ‘adult’ content that completely went over my head at the time; what great songs comprise the score; and how good the bass playing is. ‘You’re The One That I Want’ in particular has a great bass line and a great tone. Not sure who played it as several bassists are credited across the whole score. Great stuff. Musicals are usually a complete turn off for me but I thoroughly enjoyed watching Grease. M@23
Great fun! I've done the mega mix with a few bands, it's always a winner.
Newfoundfreedom
Totally agree. I'm generally really not into musicals, but I love Grease!

Sure sounds feasible - P bass with a pick...
