Exactly what I was going to suggest - I do that with all my special cables (i.e expensive starquad Mic cables etc). A roll of clear heatshrink will probably set you back a tenner from RS/Farnell (more if you go to Maplins etc). Only really feasible if you're making cables up. Much harder to do with pre-assembled cables.

The other suggestion is to get the plugs with coloured cable reliefs (like Neutrik jack plugs and XLR's). Makes identifying the correct cable in a multi-core soo much easier too (I use the resistor colour code and/or labels and/or engraved plugs too).

I roll (and coil) my own :)
