CamdenRob Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 (edited) hmmm it's time to choose the top wood. I wanted to go for something different and dark for my incoming MK3 sixer, so Paul has ordered in two tops specially, a ziricote and a macassar. I'm erring towards the macassar but it's a tough choice. Ziricote : Macassar : Edited November 25, 2014 by CamdenRob Quote
gary mac Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Tough choice indeed. They are both handsome pieces of timber. Think I would probably be going for the Macassar, although I'm sure it would take a few sleepless nights trying to make my mind up Quote
Chiliwailer Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 I like the randomness of the zinicote, very organic. Both good choices. Quote
CamdenRob Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 Thanks gents... I'm leaning towards the Macassar but to be honest I'd be happy with either. Quote
Cameronj279 Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 To throw a spanner in the works here. Out of those two I think I would go for the Ziracote. Quote
MikanHannille Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Ziricote for me too. I like it. Quote
NJE Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Ziricote, 100% looks classy and that stripe down the middle looks fabulous. The Macassar looks like the really bad worktop my neighbours have in their kitchen. Quote
bertbass Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Prefer the Ziricote myself. Quote
BassBus Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 The Ziricote is just stunning. The Macasser is a bit strippy for me. But I'm not the one making the decision. Quote
Painy Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 I'd say the ziricote is more 'classic Wal'. Not sure if you'd see that as a good or bad thing but it is the type of grain I have in my head when I think of a Wal. Quote
Lw. Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 I'd go for Ziricote if it was for me; it's a bit more subtle & the lighter stripe in the middle will probably look really good. But that's just because I'm quite conservative with how my bass looks - if you want to stand out, the Macassar will certainly do that. Quote
CamdenRob Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 (edited) I almost wish he hadn't given me the choice... I agree with the above really, the Ziricote is a more traditional looking choice but I really like that piece of Macassar and think it would stand out as unique. These are for the front and back facings over the usual Wal mahogany core which forms a kind of border when looking at the instrument face on. They will also be used for the matching headstock. Dazed Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Both really nice, if mine I'd probably go with Macassar just to be a bit different. I don't recall seeing another Wal with that kind of stripe grained wood before. ( and if you don't like it when its finished, you can always pass it on to me ) Quote
EMG456 Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 I like the Ziricote. Matching headstock, you say? Never seen a Wal with one of them before. (Other than painted, that is) Interesting. Quote
synthaside Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Ziricote , 100% for me thats realllll nice Quote
DrBike Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Ziricote does it for me. As I scrolled down the thread I saw that pic first and thought "Wow" as I scrolled down to the Macassar I thought "not so wow". Quote
CamdenRob Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 hmmm well... I do appreciate the input chaps although they are very different I like them both. My only issue with the Ziricote is that that nice light patch down the center will be broken up by a bridge, a pair of enormous pickups and the truss rod cavity at the base of the neck. Looking at my current MK3 there would be about three inches of that center strip visible along the entire length of the body and i'm worried it might look a bit angular broken up like that... I also realize that this is the very definition of a first world problem and I should just let Paul get on with what he thinks will look best! Quote

Lovely but kind of got lost when the hardware was installed. Quote
HowieBass Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 I like the Ziricote because it's more obvious that it's a bookmatched pair whereas the Macassar isn't quite so clearly defined as such. Quote
