billfaro
Every now and again a Group or a Singer will release a cover version of an original song. I very much like Manfreds Earth Bands cover of Springsteens Blinded By The Light. Manfreds Version. https://www.youtube....h?v=xJh47LybCkU Springsteens Version. https://www.youtube....h?v=yjxbOe7p8C0 What's your favorite cover version. Bill. The Beatles version is OK, but I can't stand Joe Cockers version all the histrionics just seem so fake to me.
BigRedX
For a version that is a distinct improvement over the original how about This Mortal Coil's version of "Song To The Siren"?
Joeyfivebags
A Skylit Drive - Love the way you Lie. Heard the original for the first time the other day and couldn't stop laughing at how bad it is.

M-Bass-M
There was a Facebook Group I was a member of called "The Hendrix Rule", which stated that as a general principle, cover versions are never better than the original, with the exception of Hendrix - specifically All Along The Watchtower. The purpose of the group was to propose other exceptions to this rule.
ColinB
Anyone who covers a Bob Dylan song does it better than Dylan - especially Joan Baez. (IMHO, of course!)

Froggy
Hendrix's cover of Like a rolling stone is great too, far ahead of Dylan's IMO, and as has already been mentioned, Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. If any of you listened to radio one a few years ago you might have caught Arctic Monkeys covering Girls Aloud and being far better than them at it. john_r
King Curtis' instrumental live cover of 'a whiter shade of pale' from live at the fillmore west, as heard over the opening credits to withnail and I, don't much like the original but this version is fantastic. Vinny
For a version that is a distinct improvement over the original how about This Mortal Coil's version of "Song To The Siren"?
Never heard that one before. Is it a product of the shedful of effects that makes her sound...well...deaf? Nice atmosphere otherwise. People usually stare at me like I've got more than the one head when I say this, but I think the bestest ever version of that song is this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KTZqP9FkuE When the band comes in on the little drum fill I get goosebumps. A whole level above Percy Plant's ruinous version!

neepheid
I don't know if "better" is appropriate as I enjoy them both but they're pretty different - Walk on By, Dionne Warwick or The Stranglers.
lowdown
I wouldn't say better, but a cover I like is by Chaka Khan doing 'We Can Work It Out'. Great Intro. Terrific Bass Synth from Greg Phillinganes. http://youtu.be/lfa7NjQx5fk
miles'tone
The Doors - Gloria (live version): http://youtu.be/zPv12pjykVk I've always much preferred this version to the Van Morrison/Them original.

jmchich
In line with my musical tastes I'd say any pop song covered by a "rock" band of any sort is gonna be better than the original. But as a specific example, search the ole tube for "the restarts - does your mother know". Epic
Lozz196
Jealous Guy by Roxy Music is the version I prefer, rather than John Lennons. Also like Stereophonics version of Handbags and The Gladrags better than Rod Stewarts.
