well, if you like it better, it's better --- for you. nothing more.
Eva Cassidy is up against some stiff opposition to be the best version. Patricia Routledge apparently sang a version. I would love to hear that. Unfortunatly i couldnt find it on Youtube
That is true. But is there a cover version , given a choice, that would be on your turntable instead of the original? That is the question

I think that the subjective element is taken as a given, as is the fact that without the original, the cover wouldn't exist.

Close but no cigar.

Jo Stafford recorded an English language version of the Yves Montand song with words by Johnny Mercer and that is generally thought to be the original.

I respectably disagree, I like Otis Redding's version of Satisfaction better than The Stones, but it's not better it's different.

Jealous Guy by Roxy Music is the version I prefer, rather than John Lennons. Also like Stereophonics version of Handbags and The Gladrags better than Rod Stewarts.

Two years before Rod Stewart was the Chris Farlowe version of Mike D'Abo's Handbags and Gladrags.

We've been down this road before on here and what it has revealed on more than a few occasions is that the song that people assume or take to be the original version actually isn't.
It is surprising how often that is the case.

How did they manage to cover it before it was written? :)
Huh?

Written 1967 by Mike D'Abo, demo version recorded but not released.
Released 1967 by Chris Farlowe.
Released 1969 by Rod Stewart.

Is that not correct?

It probably is. But everyone knows it's Rod Stewart's song. Even the Stereophonics said it was a cover of Rod Stewart's! :D

If your gonna cover a song make it your own , fantastic arrangement this compared to Dion's version

Agreed.
In fact it's a great album all round.
Terrific playing from everyone involved, with some really top arranging and lovely harmony structure.

Marvin Gaye's I Heard it Through the Grapevine was I believe the THIRD release of that song.

So it could be a winner. I hope no one is going to suggest Creedence is better? ;)
Well, I looked that up and it seems that first recording was the Miracles but not released, then Gaye but also not released, then Gladys Knight released and went to #2. Then Gaye version released on an album and eventually as a single.

Really? The Beatles version is OK, but I can't stand Joe Cockers version all the histrionics just seem so fake to me.

Anyone who covers a Bob Dylan song does it better than Dylan - especially Joan Baez. (IMHO, of course!)
And, possibly, this: The Naz version was the first I heard, and I loved it, and remember being somewhat perplexed on hearing the original. Haven't heard the Nazareth version for decades!

This Flight Tonight by Nazareth I prefer to Joni Mitchell's original, and I am a big Joni fan.

Yes great version but how does it compare to the original (which of course wasn't by Dion)? :)
