Every now and again a Group or a Singer will release a cover version of an original song.

I very much like Manfreds Earth Bands cover of Springsteens Blinded By The Light.

Manfreds Version. https://www.youtube....h?v=xJh47LybCkU

Been with the band for nigh on 30 years and played that song at every single show... could envisage the odd complaint if we didn't!

Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower is simply sublime.

You're a member of Manfred Mann's Earth Band? I'm seriously impressed. Off to listen to 2006 on Spotify.

Edit: Your version of "Down in Mexico" updates the Coasters original extremely well. I'm not sure I can say your version is better as like Dylan vs. Hendrix for "All along the watchtower" they are very different arrangements/interpretations, so it's an apples and oranges comparison. But your version is very, very, good and really goes somewhere with the song. IMHO.

Bloody Hell Mate. Well impressed. Who's idea was to cover Blinded By The Light. Have to say it is a fantastic version. Great stuff.

Not necessarily better, but Spiderbait's version of 'Black Betty' kicks ass. Stranglers 'Walk on by', The Pixies did a cracking version of Leonard Cohen's 'I can't forget' (on the I'm your Fan album). I particularly like My Chemical Romance's version of Dylan's 'Desolation Row'. Nick Cave did a storming version of Dylan's 'Wanted man' too.

Manfred has long been a fan of Springsteens writing and was his idea to cover the song. The 8s staccato piano motif was suggested by Mick Rogers who, by the time the song was recorded, had left the band (he rejoined in 1986, and is a member to this day).

An interesting little factlet: Although the BBTL vocal was mainly Chris Thompson, Manfred thought it would be nice if Bruce himself appeared somewhere on the record, so the "Madman Drummers" vocal section towards the end was left clear for him. Even though Bruce was on the road, Manfred was able to get his hotel number and duly called...
Manfred: "Hey, is that Bruce?"
A very sleepy Bruce: "Y-e-a-h! Grrrmmph!"
Manfred: "Err... don't worry... I'll, er... call back another time".
Manfred never called back, and sang the part himself.

BTW I joined the band in 1986 so played no part on that record.

original - Screamin' Jay Hawkins - https://www.youtube....h?v=PwXai-sgM-s

Type O Negative - Cinnamon Girl (they also did a great version of Summer Breeze, a song mentioned earlier in this thread, but a rather lacklustre Beatles medley).

Jesus And Mary Chain - Mushroom (a Can cover) and a scorching version of Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love?

Paradise Lost - How Soon Is Now (no Morrissey vocal is a bonus for me), as well as a great version of Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy. And a stonking cover of The Sisters of Mercy's Walk Away.

Sepultura - The Hunt (a New Model Army cover).

Diamanda Galas - Gloomy Sunday (with the first English lyrics that are closer to the original Hungarian lyrics than the later, better known version covered by the likes of The Associates).

Therapy? - Diane (Husker Du cover, although the original is great as well).

I absolutely LOVE Erasure's Abba-esque EP (1992, Mute Records), but YouTube won't let me play it over here in Blighty.

I'm not sure it's better than the originals, but a great reworking nonetheless.

Well, they're known in my household - I've got stuff by every one of the artists mentioned except The Jesus & Mary Chain, who I've heard lots of but don't actually like very much.

Fantastic version although I am rather partial to the Alan Price version.
