More Ozric Tentacles Greatness..

I love the Ozrics! I pretty much learnt to play bass from jamming along to Live Underslunky
I saw them live many times with Zia on bass (the player on this track) and he always had a pair of Precisions at gigs. His fave seemed to be a white one, white pickguard and loaded with an EMG active pickup I believe. The other P was a passive.
I'd love to know for sure myself but that's what I gathered from my own snooping at gigs!

The dentist i used to go to about 20 years ago was really into Ozric Tentacles and whenever i visited him we would discuss their latest LP. I think i was his only patient that had ever heard of them let alone seen them live and had their albums. Good band.

Their previous - Roly Wynn was a fantastic bassist, adore his lines on Pungent Effulgent.

Saw them play 20 odd years ago at The Lemon Grove in Exeter. They were supported by Dodgy.

[/quote] +1 R.I.P. Roly, an amazing bass player and Ayurvedic is a personal favourite too - Roly often played a Stingray or Precision. An old band i was in played at a festival with them, lovely bunch of guys with no ego's

What an awesome band!!!

I owned a CD of them from years ago, and somehow I forgot about them
Three more CDs were purchased on Amazon in the past 24 hours. And I only realised now they were playing in Edinburgh just a week ago!

Saw them on the same bill as Hawkwind in around 1990.....wow was that a cosmic night, i don't think the blue & pink strobes stopped for over two hours 😨

I never got to see Roly Wynne play live as he had stopped gigging by the time I got into them, so I've been going through loads of YouTube vids of the band to check out his playing style but drawn a blank.
Has anyone here got a link to a decent vid where you can see him playing? Not really sure even of what he looked like other than his eleven year old image that is immortalised on his father's famous "boy riding dolphin" sculpture by Chelsea bridge (which I have driven past many times without realising it was him until yesterday!)
Roly has been a big influence on many great bassists, not least Stuart Zender for one.

Anyone?

I'd heard one or two things by them and then was lucky enough to find the entire 'cereal' box set which had been transferred to 6 CD's in a scruffy s/h record shop very cheap. Picked up a few things on and off through the years, theres a decent looking introductory CD here which I don't have but the track listing seems OK;

The first time I went looking, I was lucky enough to find Pungent Effulgent and Strangeitude as a 2-CD set. It was certainly cheap enough all of...12(?) years ago and I found them both fairly accessible.

I saw him play many times, but never really appreciated him properly live - at that time Ozric gigs were more about trying to see straight. Also their gigs never achieved the clarity they manage on record.

If you're interested in Roly, you might already be aware of the great facebook tribute site, 'boy on a dolphin' - partly curated by his sister (the current Ozrics bassist), and input from his daughter. Lots of personal pics and stories on there, it's a great site.

Personally I'd avoid that. It's not from the band itself, just a label cash in. Their albums work best as a whole, taking the tracks out of context doesn't do them justice.
Best starting point is Erpland, Pungent, or Strangeitude.
However, any Ozrics is better than none, so whatever works for you. (Amazed people still buy CDs anyway!)

Live Underslunky was my first Ozrics album and still my fave. My fave live album by any artist actually.
Strangitude, Erpland and Pungent Effulgent are the high watermarks to check out first otherwise.

I've been really digging their latest, Paper Monkeys this year too (came out 2011). A stripped down band now with Ed Wynne's wife Brandi Wynne on bass and his son on keys + an awesome drummer. Not the album to start with as an introduction to the band but I think it's still quality. Nice that Brandi is using a 5 string on it which suits the bands vibe well I reckon.

Aww, that passed me by too, otherwise I'd have thought about going. They're better experienced in a field than under a roof though!
I remember having a couple of their albums in the 90s when I was a teenager. The CDs came with a leaflet inside which listed the other ones you could order from them. When you called the number it was apparently just the phone in their communal farmhouse, answered by whoever was around in whatever state of refreshment they were in at the time!

I also really like and recommend the albums, 'Jurassic shift' & 'Arborescence'...some lovely moments on that album. If your like me who likes to watch DVD's of bands live then you can't go wrong with their 'Live at the Pongmasters ball'
