Martin E
I'm looking for a good quality mic stand. Is there such a thing as an ' industry standard' like the Shure microphone? I've seen/used loads over the years with plastic bits broken off , those with feet too short to stop them tipping over, tiny knobs difficult to tighten etc etc. For the first time I actually need to buy one of these and there’s dozens on the web. So any advice please?

Phil Starr
K&M make good quality mic stands https://www.studiospares.com/Accessories/Stands-Mic/KM-21020-Mic-Stand-and-Boom-Black_408860.htm For a fraction of the price you can get the Studiospares own brand made in China version which is OK. You can get spares for both brands too.
Oopsdabassist
Beyer, thats the one I am always being told is best, its what I have for the last 6 years, and it seems bulletproof http://www.gear4musi...xJ89RoCQenw_wcB Edited December 15, 2014 by Oopsdabassist

Acebassmusic
Tama MS-205 - I've had 2 for over 15 years and they're still gong strong.
crez5150
Konig and Meyer is the standard tour product..... The Beyerdynamic, Sennheiser ones are all made by these guys. a Standard boom with ext should set you back around £45. Failing that Studiospares boom stands are very good value for money and are fairly well built but not as heavy duty as the K&M
ezbass
The Beyer GST500 is really good heavy and stable with a telescopic boom; love mine.
Martin E
Thanks - these all look very good. By coincidence my lad has asked for a mic stand for Christmas so I've ordered one of the Studiospares stands for him which I can checkout initially. molan
I like the Hercules ones, they make decent quality gig bags to lump them around in as well
NoirBass
+1 on Hercules stands. http://www.herculesstands.com/mics/MS533B.html I just bought one of these and its really good. I particularly like the 'Hideaway' boom extension.

I've tried loads over the years but always come back to Bayer dynamic
BigRedX
If you need a well designed and engineered mic stand then as others have said you can't go far wrong with either K&M or Beyer. If you need something a bit more out of the ordinary and more robust than standard take a look at Rebel Mic Stands. crez5150
The Beyer ones are K&M...... Beyer Branded....
lowlandtrees
I have always used cheap mic stands. Bad idea I know but not sure which one to get. The cheap ones are ok for light dynamic mics but as soon as you put a condenser mic and a pop thingy on them they tip over. I need one that has a really heavy base for these. I mainly use them for recording. Do any of the above mics have a particularly heavy base that would be stable with a heavier mic?
BigRedX
The Beyer ones are K&M...... Beyer Branded....
Interesting... When I bought my Beyer mic stand I looked at the K&M range because I have one of their mixer stands and it's fantastic - however the Beyer was far more attractively priced. I wonder how they managed that?

Dan Dare
Did someone mention K&M? They make for many others - Beyer, etc. You can also get spares, so don't have to chuck them if something breaks (which is rare - they're well built). I've got 8 - the oldest is getting on for 40 years old. Love 'em. can't go wrong.
witterth
Crez is right on all points, having said that I went to studio spares and got 6 boom stands for £60.00 (yes 6!!) now that's a proper deal. nowt wrong with 'em too. delivered next day. cant argue with Hercules if what you want if you want indestructible though. M@23
Another vote for Hercules stuff.
JapanAxe
I have used the same Beyer stand for at least 15 years. I would go for Hercules but I don't think my little clip-on mixer tray would fit.
Paul S
I was going to get one of the Hercules stands that has the quick lock thing on the height adjustment until I saw one in bits in a corner of a rehearsal studio. I think the gear they have there probably gives an indication of robustness.
mike257
Another vote for K&M, all the serious venues I work in use them (or the Beyer branded ones) and they withstand all manner of abuse. Studiospares ones are a good budget option as unlike many cheap ones you can actually buy spare parts to maintain them as they break. I've had a few of theirs fail on me but only after heavy use in a busy venue. If it's for your own use and not being bashed around by all sorts then i'm sure you'll get good service out of one.
