Perhaps they sounded on what is only one video. I'd hardly say GB sound "crap" though.

Hearsay, though I recall seeing some Level 42 board posts from MK diehards who had ordered them from Fender (lucky as it was a very limited run) and found them to be pretty lacklustre in their build. Tellingly, Mark used them for about 5 minutes and then went onto those GB basses, which sounded crap in fairness. (the Ohne Filtre DVD showcases this dire tone).

Hearsay. Hmm. Case in point. And this is how internet rumours start. Fender builds can be lacklustre in their build anyway, it's hardly limited to just the King signature. The more I read your comments across Basschat, the more I've come to realise that your opinion is based on internet rumours/cliches rather than any real world experience.

As for GBs... well, they were going through Ashdowns and like everything, in true chris2112 style, this single recording has become your benchmark for summing up what GBs sound like. Hardly conclusive. Funnily enough, there are loads of people who actually dig the tone on Ohne Filter. Each to their own I guess!

I use my GB for blues, funk, jazz, rock, rock 'n' roll, everything!! You have to have a decent amp to play it through. If you haven't tried one, try 1!

@Chris2112, "Mark used them for about 5 minutes and then went onto those GB basses, which sounded crap in fairness."

I wonder why Mark chose a crap-sounding bass?

(As at this point he'd only used Jaydee, Pangborn, Zon, Alembic, Status, Gibson, Musicman and Moon. And as you say Fender.)

Pain and Passion this is. Pain because I decided to let Miss Myrtle go after I had an offer for her that I couldn't refuse, and Passion because I ended up with alanbass1's Kingbass.

To be honest, if missmyrtle had got LED's it wouldn't have gone anywhere.

and then there is my Streamline...

The streamline with shaded graphite weave is always my fav. However, what does your G-77 look like today?

Now I really don't like you, Luc. In ever such a nice way of course. One of the most beautiful pieces of wood Rob has ever used. Enjoy the playing.

Case in point, this sounds awful. Like a butter tub strung with rubber bands, all floppy with no sparkle, no punch, in fact nothing really to speak of. Beige bass tone, if you will. I'm still waiting to hear or play a GB that sounds great! Mark has used many basses that sounded 10x better. That said, I've never known anyone to comment on how much they loved the Ohne Filter sound, even though it's often mentioned as a low point in terms of his tone (and the band itself).

How about keeping this thread on topic.

Any more complaints about GB basses why not take them here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/17506-the-gb-porn-thread/page__hl__gb

One of my favourites, no bendwell stuff just a nice long neck to suit my ape like arms.

Looks like a nice one! I would probably prefer 34" scale to live with, day to day. The bendwell is a cool piece of kit, but I can't see me using it anywhere other than when I'm doing a Mark King-esque bass solo!

Posted

I have the Bendwell on my streamline. I don't use it for anything! It's just so I can have a 32 scale - which I find very comfy indeed.

In fact I'm thinking about getting a 5 string as well - with the bendwell again.

So, here's my latest arrival.
I'm reliably informed that it's a 1994 Series II - Graphite body, Blue Sims LEDS.
Taking it to rehearsals tomorrow night for a good blast. I doubt it will replace the Miller Jazz as my main bass but not bad for a back up and encore bass!

Question for all you Status experts.
When I originally posted these pictures, there was some debate as to whether this was a Series II as it had been sold to me or that it was possibly a Matrix body.
As I coming to the decision to possibly move it on, I just wanted to make sure that I sold it on correctly.
Can anyone confirm?
Thanks,
Jim

I would think it is a Matrix. You can see the difference for yourself on the Catalogues page of Statii.com. Just click on the Matrix and Series II links.
