timmyo
School me please: looking for tips for basses to look at which come with both M-type and P-type pickups as standard Cheers! Edited December 20, 2014 by timmyo
theyellowcar
Always been interested to try this combo but the only basses I'm aware of are Sandbergs which are a bit out of my price range!
Highfox
This one I used to own is close, but no cookie. It had a remarkable amount of lowend as well as all the clank you could need. Edit.. There is a photo of one in the gear porn, Precisions section page 45 Edited December 20, 2014 by Highfox
longtimefred
Sandberg California VM series. i have one and its a beast!!! I had mine fitted at the factory with Haussel pickups for a more aggressive tone than the Delano's that come as stock. http://www.sandberg-guitars.de/basscat-overview/calv-series/calvm The MM tends to act more of a Jazz pup on steroids rather than sounding MM, its a little closer to the bridge. Cant say i have seen a bass with this configuration with the bridge pup actually in the MM sweet spot.
stingrayPete1977
The P has to be 'flipped' the wrong way to get the MM in the sweet spot doesnt it?
molan
Carvin have a standard option for PM configuration in either active or passive basses in the PB series. The P is located in the standard position and, by all accounts, it all works really well.
skelf
Just finished one which will be about the 5th one in total. Dazed
Yip hot rods and deluxes from various years left the factory in this format. police squad
I've always fancied a bass with active MM humbucker and a Passive P. Never got round to it
Prime_BASS
Ou7shineds Pingray. The MM pickup is in the sweet spot and P has the DG coil on the neck side of the pickup IIRC
I think most (all but the legendary Pingray) have the P in the P spot and then move the MM back, I guess that makes it lose a bit of the Ray bottom end power? Other basses with the MM in the right place have the P nearer the neck which I presume goes against what P lover love about the P, worst of both worlds IMO, I was hugely underwhelmed by the Sandberg's version off a Stingray even though it was a nice bass in everyway. MM in the right place with a single coil in the neck position surely equals either a HS Stingray or a Lakland 55-02, 55-14, 55-94 depending on pocket depth!
Yes, the Sandberg in thar picture reversed the P, but left the MM closer to the bridge than on a Stingray. That's not to say it's wrong, I'm sure it sounds great! Only that it won't do the Stingray vibe, more a fat Jazz one.

stingrayPete1977
That just leaves the HS Stingray then the Lakland is of course an inch longer scale too so the so called sweet spot would be slightly out no matter where you put it. Painy
How about this Schecter as a cheaper alternative to the Sandberg - also available as a 4 string and in metallic blue. This fiver in white though is £529 on Andertons as opposed to £1062 for the equivalent Sandberg on Thomann so, near as makes no odds, almost exactly half the price. Bridge pickup is a bit closer to the bridge than a MM but with a coil tap by means of the push/pull tone pot I reckon there should still be a pretty good mix of tones available given its a passive bass. hamfist
This is a bass I put together. The P was in the standard Fender sweetspot. The MM was a touch further back towards the bridge (you cannot overlap the MM and the P "sweetspots" whichever way round you put the P coils). The bass worked really well, but the MM, whether series or parallel, always overpowered the P in any attempt at mixing the two. So ultimately, when mixing them, I always used the MM in single coil mode, so basically making the bass a PJ setup at that point. I'll be honest and admit that I have never been a fan of the std MM-type sound though. Nowadays I stick to PJ's. I did around 100 gigs with that bass. I have some regrets at no longer having it. Anyway, I don't think the double Jazz humbucker sounded like a Music Man humbucker. It mostly sounded more like a Jazz.
