Greggo Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I'll keep it short and simple. I don't play bass as much any more and I'm moving on my yamaha bb414 on in new year to part ex for a new six string (dont hate me!) so I would just need something for a bit of recording, jamming every now and then . Would this be a good buy for forty quid as seen one in second hand with just a few dings on here and there but didn't get chance to play it. Decent enough tone for casual recording, jamming? Quote
martthebass Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 (edited) Not had the J but had a couple of Affinity P basses over the last few years. Forty quid is a good price. Stock hardware and pups are a bit meh but plenty good enough for casual use and forms a decent base for upgrade (I put a wizard thumper and some wilkinson hardware in mine). I also ended up changing the neck on my last one but that was only for fun.....here's the before and after. Edited December 21, 2014 by martthebass Quote
Lozz196 Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Agree with the above, decent payers, easy to upgrade, but certainly good enough for recording and jamming. Quote
theyellowcar Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Bargain for £40. You could do much much worse. Quote
Greggo Posted December 21, 2014 Author Posted December 21, 2014 Thanks for feedback I'll try and pop into shop and get it once Xmas shopping done! It was a nice colour too like a candy apple red. I don't know if this one had the smaller tuners on or not, but if so are they still OK to use? Quote
martthebass Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 They work ok G but aren't the best quality. I had a friend fit some wilkies to one of mine (he reamed out the holes) which were much better for not much outlay. Quote
AndyTravis Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 £40 well worth a punt, never going to lose on that. May be a pearler too. Quote
Annoying Twit Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 £40 quid is a good price if it's in good condition. Whether it's a good buy depends on how well it's set up. E.g. is the nut cut too high? Do you have the knowledge and tools to set it up properly? Quote
brensabre79 Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 £40 is a bargain even if you allow another £50 or so for a decent set up. You'll have a nice little workhorse you can upgrade reasonably. Quote
mcnach Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014
They work ok G but aren't the best quality.
erm... yes, it is £40! It's an ok bass, certainly worth the £40. Pickups probably the weakest link... but easily upgradeable if it bothers you. Do it! Quote
Geek99 Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Yes gooy buy. Get it set up correctly and it should be fine Quote
floFC Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Wouldn't any bass in playable condition be worth it at 40 quid? I'd get it. Quote
Geek99 Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Not if the cost of upgrading sub par components, or of sub par materials, makes it better economics to buy a better respected bass Quote

sprocketflup Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 It is nice indeed, and will be for sale again in the new year Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) Haha there you go, cracking bass aint she?! The only reason that bass is not my go to covers band bass is the lack of a B string, I wish my USA Jazz V sounded as good as it, I still think I will end up with a preamp in mine to try and emulate that Squier Has is gained any alterations or is it still like it was when it was mine? what a huge sounding bass! It has seen some party band buffets with me over the years that little Jazz bass Edited December 24, 2014 by stingrayPete1977 Quote
