big rob
I have an issue with my new Bill Nash pb57 bass. Plugged in today and nothing coming out at all, removed scratch plate and looked at electrics that look good and squirted some switch cleaner in both the stacked pots and put back together, the the front pickup volume and tone is working fine now, however when i roll the front off and roll the back J pickup up i get nothing at all, no signal crackling or anything. There is another strange thing that is also happening, with the front pickup volume turned up, if i turn the rear J pickup up to full it also cuts the signal completely. The controls are stacked volume and tone for the P pickup and the j pickup. Does anyone know what may be causing this issue? Kind Regards Rob
icastle
I very much doubt that the switch cleaner suddenly made the front pup come to life, I think it's more likely that there's a loose connection in there somewhere and you managed to 'disturb it' back into place when you used the cleaner. If it's under warranty then the best thing to do would be to return it. If it's not then my inclination would be to recheck the cabling again and give it a bit of a 'wiggle' whilst monitoring the output. HowieBass
Sounds like some problem with the wiring, you could have a short to ground somewhere but if it's a new instrument I'd be inclined to take it/send it back and get the retailer to sort out the issue. ikay
Did it work before? If you turn the neck vol full up and then slowly turn up the bridge pickup does the overall vol progressively reduce to zero? If it does then it sounds like the hot wire from the bridge pickup is being shorted to earth somewhere. If you have a multimeter that should be pretty easy to trace. Posting a few pics of the wiring might also help.
big rob
Hi all thanks for the advice, i think something must be wrong with the j tune / volume pot, after moving if backward and forward and pulling it up and down a bit (i know it does not move that way) it has come back to life again. Cannot send back as maker is in the USA, however he has kindly offered to pay a tech in the uk to fix it so great customer service from those guys. On the question of the volume decreasing as i turn up the j pickup the answer is no, was only killing the entire signal when at full volume. this same problem happened at a band practice once before, is it just dirt in the pots? When i opened it up i found some small would chips in the cavity. regards Rob
big rob
Hi All, Happened again last night at band practice, however the wiggling and pulling brought it back to life again, no crackling involved just came back to life. Could this be a capacitor problem or something, will take it to a tech to check out but am interested as to what this may be. Regards Rob
HowieBass
I doubt the pots would have any crud inside them if they're new. It's not uncommon to find a little dust inside a control cavity, just blow it out. The wiggling fix suggests a loose/intermittent connection somewhere - if you don't know anything about how to wire up a passive bass take it to a tech. big rob
I will open it up again and look for a loose wire but sure there was nothing obvious, will also try a blast of canned air in the pots and see how that go's before taking it to a tech. Thanks for the advice all
Dan Dare
If the maker is happy to pay you to take it to a tech, I'd do that. Sounds like an iffy connection. Sprays/air won't sort that.
